Hosted by the National Association of Manufacturers, Care Continuum Alliance and Center for Health Value Innovation, the annual Integrated Care Summit convenes the nation’s leading employers to share strategies for improving health and productivity in the workplace and showcases health care programs that improve productivity and reduce costs. At the event today, Dr. Reeves shared data that demonstrate the value of minimally invasive techniques and their dramatic reduction in lost work hours and patient recovery time.
“Not only are minimally invasive procedures less painful, scarring and disruptive, we also have significantly fewer instances of post-surgical infections and complications after MIS procedures,” he said.
In addition to his position with AIMIS, Dr. Reeves serves as vice president for Medical Affairs with HealthInsight (www.healthinsight.org), a private, nonprofit group dedicated to improving health care systems.
“Minimally invasive procedures are used most often for hysterectomy, gallbladder, appendix, prostate and bariatric surgeries, but not nearly as often as they could be,” he said in his presentation. “We’re cutting open far more people than is necessary, and I see that as a disservice to patients and to the American workforce.”
AIMIS is the nation’s leading organization for skills development training and accreditation and also works to raise awareness of the benefits minimally invasive surgical procedures. The organization is focused on building a national network of certified practices, dubbed “Centers of Excellence,” which advocate MIS procedures to reduce out-of-pocket patient expenses and dramatically reduce the patient’s recovery time.
“AIMIS is revolutionizing the way surgeons address patient care,” said Dr. Reeves. “In terms of care quality, minimally invasive procedures are profoundly more valuable to the patient and his or her employer — often allowing the patient to return to work the same or next day.”
