Alliance Data Hosts Holiday Party for 57 Children of Captain Hope’s Kids

Volunteers and employees donate gifts, time to give homeless children a jump-start on 2010

DALLAS, Texas – Fifty-seven children, ages three to 17, lined up inside Alliance Data’s lobby on December 21st, awaiting entry to the annual Captain Hope’s Angel Tree party, and permission to sit atop Santa’s lap. It’s the goal of Alliance Data and Captain Hope’s Kids that events like these—where kids receive gifts, school supplies, clothing, lunch and craft time with volunteers—successfully offer homeless kids a back-to-school jump-start as well as happy holiday memories.

Alliance Data employees have a soft spot in their hearts for children, as evidenced by their chosen company charitable focus area of children’s advocacy, as well as the company’s lengthy relationship with Captain Hope’s Kids.

Captain Hope’s Kids was founded in 1989 to better the lives of homeless children in North Texas through programs, events, and partnerships with companies like Alliance Data and with Dallas-based crisis service centers such as Reconciliation Outreach and The Family Place.

“The one-on-one time we get to spend with these kids is so important,” said Emily Beckerwerth, Alliance Data volunteer and director of financial planning. “I just love sitting and talking with them, and they really love the attention. These parties are something the kids will remember forever—that employees at Alliance Data helped share the holiday spirit with them in this wonderful way.”

“When you go to the party and you see how excited the children are over their coat and backpack and school supplies, and not just the toys, it really makes you understand that these children are doing without,” said Toni May, director of accounting, who has spearheaded the Captain Hope’s Kids party for the last several years. “We receive so much support from our senior leaders to ensure all the kids’ needs are met for the party, and Alliance Data provides each kid with something in addition to all that the employees give. This company makes sure those kids are fed, and walk away with presents and a good feeling about the holidays. It’s so meaningful.”

Captain Hope’s Kids serves more than 15,000 children in more than 42 homeless shelters each year, with 87 percent of all donations made to the agency directly funding programs that help homeless children. To learn more about Captain Hope’s Kids, visit www.captainhope.org.
