Habitat for Humanity of South Collin County (HfH-SCC), an independent affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, estimates that approximately 36,000 families in Collin County bring in less than $45,000 per year, and that 31 percent of renters in the area pay more than 30 percent of their annual income for rent. Five percent of those persons live below the poverty level as defined by the U.S. census. To ease the burden for those individuals living near or below the poverty line, and for the county overall, HfH-SCC built 10 homes in 2009 with help from individuals, organizations, churches and companies—all sending donations and volunteers to build decent, affordable homes for deserving families.
“What I like about volunteering with Habitat for Humanity is that when you help build a house, you can go back later and see it completed, knowing that your hard work made a difference to the family who now lives there. That’s so rewarding,” said volunteer builder and Alliance Data Human Resources Vice President Calvin Hilton. “I have a heart for those who need a hand, and I feel very blessed that Alliance Data both provides opportunities for its employees to give back, and encourages us to participate in them.”
“I carried 90-lb. packs of shingles on the ground and on the roof—it was hard work!” said Richard Huggins, volunteer builder and Alliance Data database administrator. “I feel strongly about doing my part for someone not as fortunate. Ultimately, we have a short time on earth, so I believe the more we give, the more complete we are, and the better we leave this place.”
Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has built over 350,000 homes, providing more than 1.75 million people with safe, affordable shelter. To get involved or learn more about Habitat for Humanity of South Collin County in Texas, visit www.habitat-scc.org or call 972-398-0634.
