ARIZONA MOTHERS MARCH AGAINST SB 1070 JOINED BY SOCIAL JUSTICE WOMEN’S DELEGATION

Phoenix, AZ -- TODAY mothers from throughout Maricopa County will march with their children from St. Matthew’s Catholic Church to the State Capitol to stand up and raise their voices against SB 1070. On Sunday, the women were encouraged by grandmothers who said, “We must move forward with courage and determination for our children and future generations.” The women and children will be joined by other women from a broad array of social justice movements based throughout the United States.

On Sunday, the delegates listened to testimonies from young children telling of their separation from their mothers, university students trying to continue their education, and grandmothers who bear witness to the horrific acts against migratory workers and their families. The delegation is committed to becoming a national “microphone.” “SB 1070 is an act of violence against women and children. We have been deeply moved and inspired by the resistance we have witnessed and the determination to solidify and expand this growing movement,” said Tamar MacFarlane, a delegate from New Orleans.

The Mother’s Day delegation is demanding that the leaders of the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues hold a hearing for the women of Arizona to come to Washington, DC to provide testimonies of the human rights abuse and violations and that First Lady Michelle Obama commit to meeting with them. “President Obama through an Executive Order could nullify the SB 1070. Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano could stop this insanity by terminating the 287(g) agreements and the Secure Communities programs, which involve local police in immigration enforcement, and we call on her to do so immediately,” said Cindy Wiesner of the Grassroots Global Justice Alliance.

The women’s delegation plans to return with thousands more women for the May 29 March Against Hate.
