Will You Be Able to See the Super Bowl?

AMD Alliance International encourages Americans to take control of eye health by seeking regular eye exams

February 2, 2010 – The Super Bowl will be played this Sunday in front of 100 million people. But for 10 million Americans, enjoying the “big game” and watching the high-paid commercials can be a frustrating and often impossible task due to age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

AMD is the leading cause of blindness in Americans 50 and older, and for many, their diagnosis comes when the disease has progressed to a state that is beyond treatment. But that does not have to be the case! When identified early, the progression of AMD can be slowed or halted with a variety of treatments prescribed by doctors and lifestyle modifications, such as a diet rich in leafy green vegetables and quitting smoking. People with AMD can also benefit from low vision rehabilitation and a variety of low vision aids.

AMD Alliance International (AMDAI), a global organization dedicated to promoting awareness, treatment and research into macular degeneration, is encouraging Americans 50 and older to seek yearly eye exams and understand the risks associated with AMD and how early detection is key to prevention and slowing the progression of the disease.

AMDAI is also encouraging Americans to remember to include eye-healthy foods during the game such as low-fat spinach dip, brightly colored vegetables and fruits and low-salt nuts.

“AMD can take away simple pleasures, like enjoying the excitement of a Super Bowl game; but taking proactive measures, such as yearly eye exams, and paying attention to risk factors, diet and nutrition will minimize the risk of AMD impacting one’s quality of life,” said Allie Laban-Baker, Vice President, Communications of AMD Alliance International, whose US operations are based in Baltimore, MD.
