7/22/2009 Who Is Harold P. Freeman?

Harold P. Freeman, MD, a past president of the Society, took the initiative to place priority on issues related to the medically underserved during his presidency. During the time he was president the American Cancer Society hosted seven regional hearings on cancer and the poor that were facilitated by Dr. Freeman. The information and testimonies gathered were documented. He has dedicated a lifetime to continuing to highlight the impact of cancer on the poor and underserved.

Purpose:

This award is for individuals, groups, organizations, or companies that demonstrate exemplary achievement in bringing the American Cancer Society's mission to underserved, at-risk communities. The award recognizes projects aimed at reducing cancer disparities amongst underserved populations and defines underserved as: racial/ethnic minority groups, poor, rural, uninsured, and or other underserved populations groups. There will be one Harold P. Freeman Award available per state in the High Plains Division.

Deadline for Entries: August 31, 2009

(Applications may be submitted year-round; however, review and awards are done once per year.)

Application Procedure

The application consists of three main areas: Description, Use of Resources, and Results. Please use as many pages as needed. Use as many additional pages as needed to develop the application.

Criteria

1. Project should be independently planned, funded, and administered by the group or organization.
2. The project must be directed toward achieving the mission of the American Cancer Society. The Society's priority programs include: breast health, colorectal cancer awareness, prostate cancer awareness, quality of life/patient services, survivorship, tobacco control, and advocacy. The program does not have to be associated with the American Cancer Society.
3. Results are important in validating the award. The project, regardless of how well conceived and planned, must have been implemented in a manner to advance the Society's mission. These criteria are intended to guide the writer when developing the application.

Procedure/Timeline

* Applications for the award may be submitted by an individual, group, organization, company or business, faith community or by the Society itself.
* All award applications must be received by the Division by Sept 1.
* The award will be presented in the state where the recipient resides.
