AzFL Arizona Football League Pat's Picks

Still Standing - Too Bad for You - Semi-Finals

By: Patrick Montgomery for the Arizona Football League and ASPN Arizona Sports Network Radio.

Holy Cow (Harry Caray)!!! What a great week it was in the AzFL. Can you believe the great games we had as the Monsoon (don’t hate) escaped the Crusaders and the Soul Patrol did what they needed to do. I can tell you that the Hitmen were living up to their name with an epic hard hitting affair against the Head Hunters but what can you say about the Wolf Pack. Dudes you totally dismantled the Champs. What was it 20-0 at some point? Man coaching that bike seems to work doesn’t it Coach Braybrooks. I always say “experience wins in the playoffs” and yes once again I was right? Man don’t you hate it when I am right? Ok well since I have not received any emails about my picks from last week except for one Mr. Joshua Martinez of the Hitmen letting me know how I do every week thank you very much you are now on the Standing Pat staff (without pay of course), oh and to the lovely Ms. Buckley thank you for taking me out of the dreaded, “Friendship Timeout”. I was starting to get tired of having my nose in the corner, it smelt like paint. Ok well without any further shenanigans lets get on with the games.

# 7 Wolf Pack vs. # 6 Hitmen 4:30pm at Youngkers High School

Ok so a few words come to mind to describe the Wolf Packs game, HAMMERED, SMOKED, DISMANTLED, ANNIHILATED and my personal favorite; they beat the stuffing out of them. I have had a few conversations with Coach Braybrooks and there is a reason he has his team in this position again. The man knows football. It is that simple. Kind of like how I know nachos. It is in the blood. He does the little things that drive wives crazy like breaking down film and having staff meetings and practices. And having great players that run well and hit doesn’t hurt either. See kids I do believe that the season is like a rollercoaster where teams are up and down and sometimes you go up at the right time and the Wolf Pack like the Hitmen are peaking at the right time.

Ok I know I know I left you guys for dead last week and you proved me wrong. Great job Hitmen and I do thank you for all the crap I am receiving from your team for picking against you. To illustrate; if crap was love you guys would be that dude that flies around in the diaper with the heart shaped arrows at Valentine’s Day. I mean if giving crap were an ocean you guys would be the Pacific. Well, I guess you do have better pitching then the Head Hunters. Just like in the Grande they have a great coach in Mr. Smith in the Staff and mix in some great players and you have a team that gets to the Semi’s.

Prediction: I really can’t wait to see this one because the Hitmen have a little score to settle as the Wolf Pack went up to the Great White North and beat the men in green 14-7 in a monster hitting game. I think though this is a different time and place and the edge for me is going to be with the Wolf Pack. Now I know I am risking another Friendship Timeout but the Wolf Pack are playing great ball right now and was it me or did they look faster? If they are, that is scary because I played against them and they can flat out hit. Hitmen will be in the game but the Pack has been there and the Hitmen have not and I would not do the column justice if I didn’t mention that Mr. Braybrooks has won the big game but Mr. Smith is still looking to win the big game.

Offensive Edge: Wolf Pack-The Hitmen have had issues scoring lately.

Defensive Edge: Tie-Both teams can bring the wood, trust me I know.

Special Teams: Wolf Pack-They have a size and speed advantage.

Coaching: Wolf Pack-Braybrooks has won the big game Smith has not but both are great coaches.

Intangibles: Wolf Pack-They are playing out of their minds right now. Wolf Pack 21 Hitmen 13
# 1 Monsoon vs. # 5 Soul Patrol at 7:30pm at Youngkers High School
Ok, so everyone is entitled to have a bad game and yes they did have a bad game and yes the Crusaders played a great game but Monsoon try not to have a bad game IN THE PLAYOFFS!!! Dude I thought for a moment that David was going to take down Goliath again. Dudes, I bet you were in panic mode or maybe not? See I truly believe this is a great team but they are in uncharted territory right now. How many of them have been to the Big Dance? A handful maybe and out of those small few how many have rings? One of the toughest things to do as a coach is keep your guys grounded. Coach Carver is doing everything he can to down play this game and he should. Too many mistakes can happen when you are too geared up.
Ok, isn’t it funny but more Soul Patrol dudes call the radio show to give me an ear full than any other team in the league. I love that about this team. They talk so much it makes it fun. Win, lose, at the movies, at dinner, alone in the car they are still talking. It is their game and it doesn’t work of anyone except them. Dude I will say it now only because you need to hear it but you got lucky last week. You really should have blown them out of the water. Dudes search your feelings you know it is true. Like at the end of the first quarter you got a pick and it took you 20 minutes to muff a snap on the field goal and the dude DROPPED the ball in the end zone. I stopped counting drops after 10. You need to do the little things like hold the ball. If you can do that you guys will be losing to the Wolf Pack next week in the Championship game. Don’t get me wrong I love your team, I love your team so much I am even letting one of your players borrow my number but you need to eliminate the mistakes.
Prediction: Ok so the Monsoon should have the jitters out from last week but they are in a fight for their lives as the Soul Patrol gave the game away last time they played. This is an easy pick. This will be a great game but as usual if the Soul Patrol doesn’t heed my warning they will lose. Here it is Patrol are you ready? DON’T KICK THE BALL TO KC. This is a very evenly matched game and normally one player will not determine the outcome but this might be the exception. For the Monsoon to win they need to limit the mistakes and not get caught up in the trash talking.

Offensive Edge: Monsoon-Nick is a proven winner and they have a great O-line.

Defensive Edge: Soul Patrol- The fastest 11 guys in AZ (Sorry Cardinals).

Special Teams: Monsoon- Two letters starts with “K” and ends with “C”.

Coaching: Monsoon-Carver has made it look easy all year.

Intangibles: Soul Patrol-They have something to prove.
Monsoon 13 Soul Patrol 10 (if KC gets the ball kicked to him)
Soul Patrol 10 Monsoon 7 (KC doesn’t get the ball kicked to him)

Well there you have it the Final Four for the Arizona State Championship. If will be epic. Well as usual I was on Facebook and see that Mr. Peacock wants to write a column called “Sitting Peacock”. That would be totally awesome. We could breakdown games, talk about current events and do all of this while in the Hot Tub Time Machine (Great White Buffalo). Let hook that up for next year. Don’t forget kids you never know when the Coach is going to be on the radio show KXXT 1010 AM Saturday nights from 8:00-Midnight. Once again he was epic and so was the Animal. Jersey was great also. I am thinking that maybe we need a radio staff calendar? How cool would that be? I would pay huge $$$ for that bad boy. Kids have a great week and a safe week and I will see you at the games.
Much love, Pat
