AzFL Arizona Football League Standing Pat

Pat Montgomery calls it as he sees the 2010 playoffs

Glendale, AZ 4/22/10
By: Patrick Montgomery for ASPN Radio and Arizona Football League

Let the games begin. Hello fans I am Standing Pat your Story Teller for this week bringing you the matchups for the Second Round of the AzFL Playoffs. I do have to say that man did the Wolf Pack look great last week or what? Maybe they have finally figured out what kind of team they are and can right the ship. Also Crusaders; way to get the win last week. I was sweating it out but you were able to somehow get it done. Well enough of me, let’s see who will win and lose this weekend.

# 1 Monsoon vs. # 9 Crusaders 4:00pm at Youngkers High School Buckeye (Soccer Field)

Doesn’t it seem like forever since we have seen the Monsoon on the field? Like a month or something and that is a small concern for me and should be for them. No hitting anyone but your own can hurt you but the way the Monsoon have played this season I don’t think it will hurt that bad. I have said it before and I will say it again I just get the feeling they have been holding back most of the season. I can’t put my finger on it but they are not playing 100% but when you go 10-0 you don’t need to go 100%.

Strength and Honor my brothers, but you need to get it into gear this weekend. I am going to call it like I see it and you got lucky last weekend. Let’s face it you should have lost but you did manage to win and you get to live another day. I tell you that you need the team that beat the Stampede to show up with that fire and intensity because without it you are a very average team.

Prediction: Will the Monsoon be rusty, yes but they have a ton more weapons in their arsenal. The key for them is to get off to a fast start and not give the ball up to many times. They will give it up as time off seems to make that a reality but they need to not allow the Crusaders to capitalize on that. Crusaders you need to play the game of your life and hope you can capitalize on the Monsoon mistakes or you will be done for the year.

Offensive Edge: Monsoon
They have too much of everything.

Defensive Edge: Monsoon
# 1 in the league.

Special Teams: Monsoon
KC Collins, enough said.

Coaching: Tie
Both staffs have done a great job this year.

Intangibles: Monsoon
KC Collins, enough said.

Monsoon 21 Crusaders 7

# 4 Demons vs. # 5 Soul Patrol 4:30pm at Youngkers High School Buckeye (Football Field)

Well the Demons lost what, 3 of their last 4 and limped into the playoffs. Not good dudes but the good news is you are still a great team and in my opinion a serious contender. Here it is in a nut shell Demons. If you were to eliminate the little mistakes you would win it all. The dropped passes, missed blocks, missed tackles the little things you were taught in Mighty Mites. Teams don’t beat you guys you guys lose games. Turn that around and you might mess up and win a Championship.

Soul Patrol dudes. It is your time to show the rest of the AzFL what I saw when you tattooed us (Dragons) in Maricopa. That is, you are the fastest team in the land. All year long all I have heard from the Patrol is how great they are and how they are going to roll and blah, blah, blah. Now it is time to show us. I think you can do it but do you guys think you can do it?

Prediction: This game is going to be epic. Forget about the, “these teams haet each other’” stuff because we all know they do. This is the Battle of Tucson. It is for bragging right in the Southland (North Mexico) and both teams are evenly matched. This bottom line for me is I think the Demons are playing for the moment and the Soul Patrol is playing for the past and the future. That is not good.

Offensive Edge: Demons
Very balanced

Defensive Edge: Soul Patrol
Fastest team in the state

Special Teams: Soul Patrol
See “Defensive Edge”

Coaching: Demons
Can get more from their team when need be.

Intangibles: Demons
Not looking ahead too much.

Demons 14 Soul Patrol 10

# 2 Stampede vs. # 7 Wolf Pack 7:00pm at Youngkers High School Buckeye (Soccer Field)

Yes this is a rematch of last year’s Championship game but neither of these teams are the same. I know I have been very critical of the Stampede this year especially with their Management and the moves they have made and time will tell if I am right or not. Anything short of a repeat title and I will be. I do know they are still a great team and other than a couple of bumps in the road have the ability to win it all.

Well Wolf Pack, it is nice to see you guys back to Pack football. You HAMMERED the Raiders last weekend and you needed it, it felt good didn’t it, kind of like a cold drink of water in the summer. Here is a little tip from your buddy Standing Pat. Stop playing like girls and keep hammering people, man it made me mad to see a great team like the Wolf Pack play soft football. Maybe you should change your name to the Flowers or something. You are not a pretty team get it? Lay the wood dudes.

Prediction: Bottom line the Stampede do not control this game no matter what they say. If the Wolf Pack play Wolf Pack football and punch the Stampede in the mouth they will win. If they play like the Flowers they will lose. The one thing the Stampede does hold over the Wolf Pack is consistency. They are the same team winning or losing and that makes them dangerous.

Offensive Edge: Tie
Both teams are very good at what they do but the Stampede is a little faster where the Pack is a little bigger.

Defensive Edge: Wolf Pack
Both Bigger and faster and hit harder (trust me I know)

Special Teams: Stampede
All around the best in the league

Coaching: Wolf Pack
Dustin is a good coach but almost anyone can coach a Cadillac. Braybrooks could get a bicycle to win.

Intangibles: Stampede
I am picking against them and they win when I do.

Wolf Pack 21 Stampede 17

# 3 Head Hunters vs. # 6 Hitmen at Youngkers High School Buckeye (Football Field)

It seems to me that the Head Hunters game is to win by the skin of their teeth every week. Not a very good strategy if you plan to go all the way. Now I think they are having a tough time making up their mind if they are a good team or an average team. I think they could be great with all the talent they have. Big line, speed everywhere and a great QB. They do however seem to not have a lot of urgency and this did cost them # 2 and almost # 3-# 6. I can only hope they realize they are in the playoffs and there might not be a next week.

The Hitmen are a classic teewner team. They beat the teams they should have and lost to the teams they should have. Not a bad place to be unless all the teams you lost to are also in the playoffs. This just happens to be the case for the Hitmen. Now they did beat the Head Hunters in week # 1 6-2 (I guess the Hitmen have better Pitching) but that was all the way in week one. This team is all over the map and hard to read some weeks. They are not as talented as they have been in the past but they are not as bad as I have seen them before also.

Prediction: I think these two teams are very evenly matched and this game will be a coin toss. Whichever team wants this the most will get it. For the Hitmen they need to bring all their dudes and a speech from Mrs. Buckley wouldn’t hurt either. For the Head Hunters you are not playing the Warlords, Dragons or Ironmen and you can’t win on luck. You need to go out and take a game for once.

Offensive Edge: Head Hunters
They are bigger yet just as fast.

Defensive Edge: Hitmen
They have always gotten up for the big games

Special Teams: Tie
This could decide the game at the end.

Coaching: Hitmen
Jay has a proven track record.

Intangibles: Head Hunters
They are very hungry right now.

Head Hunters 10 Hitmen 7

Well that is all I have time for, oh wait one more, ok two or so more things. Did you hear Coach LaBarbera on the radio two weekends ago? I did and it was EPIC. Coach is a walking entertainment machine I tell you. In fact you can rent the big guy for parties, bar mitzvah and most office occasions. He has reasonable rates and keeps you rolling in the aisles for hours. Also I got to say that Mr. Peacock’s hot tub is off the hook yo! Tons of great stories are going to surface from that bad boy like the rumor that it is filled with Icy Hot. That is a total fabrication. It is filled with water. Also don’t forget to listen the KXXT 1010 on your AM dial from 8:00-Midnight for all the details from Round Two in the race for the State Championship. Who knows maybe Coach will show up again then maybe he won’t. Have a great week my friends and I will see you at the games.

Much love, Pat (call in on Saturday night holler back)
