Author Showcase Features Award-winning Author Fiona Ingram

09.07.2009 –

The Reading Tub, Inc. is honored to have hosted South African journalist Fiona Ingram in its Summer 2009 Author Showcase. Fiona's debut middle grade novel The Secret of the Sacred Scarab is guaranteed to hook kids on history and mythology.

Although she has been a journalist for more than 15 years, Fiona Ingram never envisioned becoming a children's writer. After taking her nephews on a trip to Egypt, she thought she would write a short story as a special memory of the trip. The short story turned into a full-length novel; and now The Secret of the Sacred Scarab, an IPPY finalist, is the first book in a middle-grade adventure series.

"I love the Author Showcase and the opportunity to introduce our audience to writers and books they may not know about. In thinking about the summer, though, I wanted to take the Showcase in a new direction, says Terry Doherty, Executive Director of The Reading Tub, Inc. There is more to reading than just sitting with a book, and kids learn to read in different ways. I want our showcase to reflect that. The Secret of the Sacred Scarab does just that.

Fiona's nephews are the role models for Justin and Adam, the cousins who star in The Secret of the Sacred Scarab. The boys, fresh from learning about Egypt in school, take a trip with their Aunt Isabel and enjoy some hands-on learning. Says Doherty: I love how Fiona wove in different types of learning into the story.

The boys learned a lot by listening to their tour guide and asking questions; they used maps to visualize and understand Ancient Egypt; and they listened when Aunt Isabel read the newspaper to them. It is so important for kids to see that reading and learning come in a variety of media. The fact that their peers were doing it makes it even more meaningful.

Fiona is dedicated to educating kids through reading. That's why you will find maps, history, and links to more information on her website. She also has an ongoing contest on her website where school libraries can win a copy of her book.
