BOLOCO LEAVES THE NEST

Globally inspired burrito restaurant opens its doors in Bethesda, Maryland; its first outside of Red Sox Nation

Boston, MA – A family of restaurants known for its love of Fenway and the Boston Harbor is excited to announce its arrival into a new market. This Thursday, July 19, 2012, Boloco will go where no globally inspired burritos have gone before: Bethesda, Maryland – and soon after, Washington D.C. Boloco Bethesda will open its doors this Thursday in true celebratory style by hosting a Free Burrito Day.

Boloco Bethesda, located along Bethesda Row at 4930 Elm Street, will serve a menu of globally inspired burritos, bowls, smoothies and shakes. When Boloco says, “globally inspired,” they are true to their word, offering not just traditional ‘rice and bean’ burritos but instead those inspired by the most delicious culinary traditions from around the world. In fact, only 18% of burritos sold are technically Mexican-inspired.  A few globally inspired flavors include the spicy Buffalo, Bangkok Thai and the newly added Tikka Masala. Guests have a choice of protein including naturally-raised, hormone and antibiotic-free grilled chicken, grass-fed beef, all natural pork, organic tofu, or sautéed fajita veggies. The burritos are wrapped in a flour or whole-wheat tortilla, or in a bowl (sans tortilla).  Uniquely, Boloco offers three sizes including the original, small or the “disturbingly small” mini.

Boloco shakes and smoothies (also available three sizes) vary from refreshingly fruity to deliciously sweet. They include unique ingredients like Nutella (in the aptly named “Nutella” shake), peanut butter (in the very addicting “Jimmy Carter” shake), and cranberries (in the not-too-tart “Cape Codder” smoothie). Other menu items include snacks like house-made tomato salsa and guacamole, and the dangerously addicting Boloco chocolate chip cookie (which can also be blended to make a “Cookie Monster” shake).

In case the menu overwhelms you (which it has been known to do), don’t worry.  Boloco will have a “Boloco for Dummies” menu on hand for first timers.

Breakfast will be served daily from 7:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., where guests can order up a variety of simple, but delicious, breakfast burritos.  Most famous is the “Truck Stop” burrito – filled with cage-free scrambled eggs, bacon, potatoes, and melted cheese.

Boloco Bethesda will be open each day from 7:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. The 3,000 square foot restaurant features comfortable seating in a mix of booths, tables and high tops.  Guests can order traditionally with a Boloco team member, or save up to 3 minutes and 46 seconds by using one of four self-service kiosks.  Of course, ordering online or via its iPhone app is not only faster but cheaper – every order is automatically discounted 10%.  The restaurant will also feature free wireless internet, flat screen televisions and original Bethesda-focused artwork by Boloco’s favorite artist, Sean Boyce.

Stop by Thursday for Boloco’s traditional opening celebration – Free Burrito Day from 11am to 8pm.  Boloco will be giving away free mini and small size burritos and the original size will be offered for just a buck.  They’ll also be raising money for Bethesda Green, a non-profit that supports environmental initiatives in the area, so do bring some extra George Washingtons. Friends and new neighbors, Honest Tea, will also be giving away free drink samples.

The Boloco team is super excited to be in Bethesda and has had a blast getting to know its new friends and neighbors and looks forward to growing old together.  As for D.C. itself, Boloco is planning a downtown opening early this fall.  For more free burritos, stay tuned…
