First-of-its kind U.S. Study Examines the Economical and Environmental Benefits of Buying Bulk Foods

Research findings show compelling reasons for shoppers to buy in bulk

Portland, Ore. – A shopper can save an average of 89 percent by purchasing natural and organic foods in the bulk foods aisle of a grocery store, according to a recent study conducted by the Portland State University’s Food Industry Leadership Center (FILC) on behalf of the Bulk is Green Council (BIG). The study, the first of its kind in the United States, also found tangible environmental benefits of buying in bulk.

National Bulk Foods Day is Saturday, October 23, and the Bulk is Green Council invites people around the country to celebrate by buying everything from spices to chocolate almonds to rice in bulk at their nearest grocery store or co-op. To commemorate the day, BIG recently launched a series of two YouTube videos that explore the benefits of buying in bulk from the shopper’s perspective.
