Former MP's Pulpit and Politics is Available and in the News

A book by Ottawa-based writer, blogger and former Member of Parliament Dennis Gruending is now on sale and in the news. Pulpit and Politics: Competing Religious Ideologies in Canadian Public Life is a provocative exposé of the competition between religious progressives and conservatives for power and influence in Canadian politics. The book was released by Kingsley Publishers of Calgary in early October and is available for sale through Alpine Book Peddlers.

Pulpit and Politics is already garnering media attention. It was featured in a front-page story in the Ottawa Citizen on Sunday, October 2nd. Dennis has also done interviews for forthcoming articles with the Globe and Mail, Ottawa Citizen, Hill Times, the OSCAR (an Ottawa-based community newspaper), and for the website of a citizen’s group called Canadians for Democratic Renewal. There are launches planned for Ottawa (November 2nd), Muenster, SK (November 20th) and Saskatoon (November 21st). Dennis will also do a book signing at Brittons magazine store in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood on November 5th.

Here is what some readers are saying about Pulpit and Politics:

“Gruending’s collected contemplations in Pulpit & Politics are a must-read for anyone who wishes to grasp the spiritual tensions at play behind Stephen Harper’s majority government.” – Marci McDonald, journalist and author of The Armageddon Factor

“Dennis Gruending’s well informed observations on the role of faith in politics, and the politics of faith, are an insightful guide to the current political landscape." – Rev. Bill Blaikie, former Member of Parliament.

“… he’s focused like a laser on the analytical heart of today’s burning issues. I not only enjoy reading Pulpit and Politics. It challenges me to respond to today’s social and religious struggles from deeper, more fervent and prophetic values.” – Joe Gunn, executive director, Citizens for Public Justice.

Dennis spent four years in the early 1990s as director of information for the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops, and later served as a Member of Parliament. Earlier in his career, he worked as a print and television journalist and as a radio host. He is the author of six books, including the best selling Great Canadian Speeches. He has written biographies of Emmett Hall whose Royal Commission recommended medicare for Canada, and of former Saskatchewan premier Allan Blakeney. He writes a blog, also called Pulpit and Politics, which has won several national awards.
