How to Make People Listen - Launching in Calgary, AB

Jean Hudson grew up in an age when children were to be seen and not heard. She longed to be heard and eventually, as an adult, learned how to make it happen. She is now the author of How to Make People Listen (without being pushy!) 99 Coaching Tips for Powerful Conversation.

One of the most important secrets to being heard, Jean argues, is to start by being a good listener. So why is it that good listening skills are so rare?
  • Only a tiny percentage of people have ever had any listening training. They don't know how to listen or what to listen for.
  • Real listening requires deliberate conscious attention and focus. It does not happen automatically.
  • Human beings have become accustomed to, and in some cases addicted to, high levels of noise, stimulation and action. Listening, however, isn't an adrenalin rush.
  • People get caught up in their own thoughts and agendas, losing track of what is happening to those around them.

You can dip in and out of the 99 tips in the book and learn something useful in a few sentences. For example, in discussing results, Jean says,
"Know exactly what you want to achieve from a conversation. Then, after the conversation, measure your communication effectiveness by results. Simply measure - there's no value in judging, blaming, or shaming yourself if you didn't get everything you wanted. No one gets exactly what they want all of the time, or even most of the time. We just come as close as possible, celebrate successes, and try again."

Throughout the book, Jean Hudson inspires and supports the reader. These are some of her key encouragements:
  • You have to believe - in yourself, your message, and the value it brings others.
  • You have to speak clearly, briefly, and confidently (and it won't ever be 'perfect').
  • You have to focus on helping others, and set aside your own fears, especially the fear of what others might think.
