SocioSocial Explores Future of Publishing, Tech, Social Media SXOSXL #YYC

A rousing, day-long discussion of the future of social media, publishing and open source technology. Come explore ideas about the effect of ubiquitous media, digital libraries, SEO, startup lessons in agility, a hypothetical murder and the democratization of design.

SocioSocial will be held on December 7th, 2011 (8am-4pm) in Calgary, Alberta, Canada at the Epcor Centre for the Performing Arts.

Conceived by rapidBOOKS, SocioSocial#yyc is a relaxed, sociable event with three topic streams running concurrently throughout the day: open source technology development, social media and new directions in publishing.

A keynote address to all participants will be followed by a breakdown into streams where speakers will present a provocative position for 10-15 minutes followed by discussion for the rest of the session. At the end of the day a panel discussion will involve the moderators from the three streams.

Keynote address about the changing state of publishing
Brian F. O'Leary is a publishing veteran with 25 years experience. O'Leary is the author of research report on the impact of free content and digital piracy on paid book sales, as well as the editor and primary contributor for a study of the use of XML in book publishing. Both reports were published by O'Reilly Media in 2009. O'Reilly has an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Moderators include Adam Goetz from Suitcase Interactive and Digital Alberta, Russell Bowers from CBC Daybreak and Roger Kondrat from West17Media.

 

SPEAKERS

BILL FRIEDRICH is a digital media software architect at TRLabs. He will speak about the effect of "ubiquitous media."

DONNA LIVINGSTONE is Director of the University of Calgary Press. She will discuss the future of publishing and digital libraries.

JEFF SPIRA is a seasoned small-business-startup operations and markeeting manager. Spira is the author of Make SEO Work For You and will present on site design and implementation, site content and backlinks.

WENDY PETERS is the Calgary Yelp community manager and iconic social media socialista about town.

LUU DUONG is an Agile project manager and Scrum Master at eCompliance Management Solutions, Canada's leading OHS technology partner. Duong, along with Michael Khodosko, wrote Practical Experience. He will discuss Startup Lessons Learnt: how to build a lasting companhy using an agile approach while shortening the feedback loop.

TONY GRIMES graduated with a degree in Environmental Biology with minors in Chemistry and Psychology. While in university he worked at the student newspaper and changed course. He now as a web development company, Siteline Solutions. Tony's presentation involves a hypothetical murder.

LUIS BERUMEN is a multidisciplinary designer who has recently started his own design studio in Calgary. He has a Masters Degree in product development and conceptualization from Elixava School of Design in Barcelona, Spain and a Bachelors degree in Integral Design by the Western Institute of Technology and Higher Education. Luis will discuss how designers can make social media, open source, copyright law straightforward; new trends and the democratization of design.

ROB OAKES is a biomedical engineer and researcher based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Oakes is the author of Writing with Open Source Tools (Vols 1 and 2). He will discuss tools to use to focus your writing and make it beautiful. He will then show you how to publish your piece as a printed book, e-book or on the web.
