The Future of Journalism - A Calgary Discussion

Calgarians discuss opportunities in the future of journalism

In Canada, how will we receive our news in years to come? Will we still have magazines, television, radio, books, newspapers? If so, what will they look like and how will they be monetized? Has the internet placed investigative journalism under threat of extinction?

Last month Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore stated that the business model relied upon by broadcasters is broken. CBC's latest plan to cut some 800 jobs and sell off some $125-million in assets, doesn't sound like a new business model, so where ARE they headed?

Similarly, Canwest has been cutting costs and selling assets while extending their credit. Still no apparent change to the business model of their newspapers, though they have added video and blogs. Their latest series "The Future of Canadian Newspapers" assures us of the viability of Canadian newspapers.

So, where are the possibilities and opportunities in this changing technological environment and economy? And, meanwhile, what's a journalist to do?

Tuesday, May 5, Calgarians meet at the Vicious Circle to discuss possibilities for the future of journalism in Canada. Panelists Don Braid, David Taras and Roger Kondrat will each present their positions, followed by an open discussion moderated by Lyn Cadence.

DON BRAID, Calgary Herald columnist, author and blogger has recently been to hell and back, blogging from the emergency room at the hospital - for 14 hours.

DAVID TARAS, University of Calgary professor in the Department of Communication, has written extensively on the Canadian mass media and on Canadian politics. You have probably seen him on Global Calgary TV's Morning News.

ROGER KONDRAT, Mighty Mouth Media, argues that newspapers could provide services that would make them regional power.

LYN CADENCE, Cadence PR and book publishing professional sees opportunities for journalists to brand themselves and augment their income using social media.
