Denver, CO - The Cat Care Society (CCS) 'Cajun's Closet' Thrift Shop is holding its annual Halloween Book Sale on Saturday, October 29, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The announcement is made by Clyde Dawson, CCS Interim Executive Director, who says, "There will be special deals on Cajun's wide selection of books, including mass market books, six for $1; hard back books, $1 each; trade paperback books, two for $1; and children's books: 10 cents each. Plus, we are offering additional discounts for those brave enough to come in costume to help raise funds for the CCS shelter cats and Cat Care Clinic."
Cajun's Closet, located at 5707 W. 6th Avenue (on the Frontage Road west of Sheridan), is Denver Westword's Best Thrift Store for 2011 and was recently renovated at the end of August by a dedicated team of Cat Care Society volunteers, customers and donors. Cajun's Closet Manager Dawn Risner recounts, "We pulled up carpet, painted floors and walls, took down window treatments, built new displays, rearranged the library, and last but not least, updated the front room just in time for fall shopping and our annual Halloween Book Sale."
Further, according to Risner: "With Halloween right around the corner, we're all thinking ghosts, ghouls, and creepy crawlies. The new and improved library at Cajun’s Closet has a wonderful variety of Sci-fi and Fantasy books to choose from. As an avid reader myself, I can tell you that a good book about a killer clown will do a lot to creep you out on a dark night. Beyond that, Cajun's Closet offers vampires, werewolves, aliens, serial killers and a wide variety of other things that go bump in the night. If the imaginary and legendary don’t interest you, you can always find a really good true story of debauchery; we have true ghost stories, true crimes and biographies of politicians. If creepy isn’t on your list we also have a huge mystery section to choose from. Our mystery section has everything from cute light mysteries to the genuinely twisted. Even if you have never been a big reader we can find something to interest you in the thousands of books at Cajuns."
Cajun's Closet suggestions for good Halloween reading include:
* True Ghost Stories (1995) by Terry Deary
* The Zombie Survival Guide & World War Z by Max Brooks
* Anything by Stephen King, Dean Koontz and John Saul
* For Vampire introduction: Anne Rice for advanced readers and Charlaine Harris for those looking for something lighter.
* And wonderful year round reading: Jim Butcher & Simon R. Green
Don't forget the other great shopping at Cajun's Closet while checking out the Halloween Book Sale. Cajun's has great collectibles, home items, jewelry, and a large inventory of clothes. Regular hours are Wednesday - Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Quoting from Westword's 2011 'Best Of' overview: "Cajun's, named for a one-eyed orange tabby who originally roamed the place, has long been dealing used clothing and other merchandise in support of the Cat Care Society. But its incarnation of the last few years, since doubling the store's space in 2005, really shows what good management can do for a place: The current regime not only shows off an excellent eye for quality, but it's also done much to build up the shop's stature, with delightful seasonal displays, great deals and a veritable used book store set up for perusal in the back room. Discounts are offered for donations of canned cat food, and it doesn't hurt that the funds raised there go to help Cat Care Society denizens at the adjacent no-kill, cage-free shelter." About Cajun's Closet
In 1995, the fact that a house already existed on the CCS then new 6th Avenue property was a bonus - it was renovated, numerous dead trees and shrubs were removed, a parking lot added, and Cajun’s Closet was born. The new thrift store was named after the CCS’s mascot, Cajun, when it opened in February of 1995. Cajun, a large, longhaired, orange tabby boy was the cat in residence at the thrift shop until 2002 when his health started to fail. After losing one eye and becoming blind in the other it was time for him to retire. Now Cat Care's “shop cats” are cats from the shelter that are available for adoption. Today, Cajun's Closet is located in the red brick 5707 W. 6th Avenue building to the east of the shelter (look for the big THRIFT SHOP banner on the roof on the frontage road north of the freeway between Sheridan and Wadsworth (access via Sheridan). About the Cat Care Society
The CCS, founded in 1981 by Linda East, DVM and Lynn Rowe, is a nonprofit organization established to improve the quality of life for homeless, injured and abused cats in the Denver metropolitan area. The Society's goals are:
* To sponsor educational programs that promote responsible pet ownership, humane treatment of all animals, and the elimination of pet overpopulation;
* To shelter cats in a healthy, cage free environment and to find compatible and responsible families for every cat;
* To provide community outreach programs that improve the quality of life for cats and people;
* To be a friend to all cats.
The CCS is supported by a number of loyal members and contributors, without whom the shelter could not operate. CCS receives no government funding. In addition, CCS volunteers assist with many fundraising activities each year such as book sales, Meow Mart, Cajun’s Closet Thrift Store, the holiday gift and bake sale and much more.
