Secretary Duncan, Congresswoman Norton, and Mayor Gray to Join City Year Washington, DC for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Washington, D.C. – Secretary Duncan, Congresswoman Norton, Mayor Gray, Chancellor Henderson, Chairman Brown, and Superintendent Anderson will join City Year Washington, DC on Monday for a day of service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. City Year, a national organization that unites teams of young people for a year of service in high-need urban schools, mobilizes its 2,000 corps members nationwide and thousands more volunteers each Martin Luther King, Jr. Day for service in the community.  

City Year considers the holiday a day on, not a day off. City Year’s 200 corps members and staff will lead 800 volunteers to provide revitalizing service in Ward 5 to Dunbar High School, Buttler-Wyatt Boys and Girls Club, Community Academy Public Charter School, and So Others Might Eat. Projects include painting murals, building bookshelves, a career workshop, and neighborhood clean-up.

PHOTOG: The day will begin with a high-energy kickoff led by City Year corps members featuring City Year’s signature physical training demonstration. Speakers include Secretary Duncan, Congresswoman Norton, Mayor Gray, Chancellor Henderson, Chairman Brown, and Superintendent Anderson; speakers will participate in physical service following kickoff.

200 uniformed City Year Washington, DC corps members and staff will work with 800 local volunteers to revitalize Dunbar High School and surrounding community. Uniforms consist of red City Year jackets, khaki pants and Timberland boots.
