TACOMA, Wash. (Oct. 29, 2011) – DaVita Inc. (NYSE: DVA), a leading provider of kidney care services committed to improving the quality of life for those diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (CKD), announced today that 35 DaVita teammates (employees) joined with Green Tacoma to plant conifer trees, remove invasive weeds and cleanup Garfield Gulch park grounds.
“Giving back to our community is central to DaVita’s values so spending the day making Tacoma a great place to live was so fulfilling,” said Angela Johnson, DaVita business analyst and volunteer. “It’s heartbreaking that someone would be malicious and try to destroy the good work being done, but we are determined to help the Green Tacoma Partnership move forward.”
Working to battle against vandals who have recently been tearing up new plantings in the park, DaVita teammates felt extra motivation to get the restoration back on track. The project is a long one in the making, being led by a neighbor and Green Tacoma Partnership habitat steward who has spent seven years working to restore the Gulch to its native habitat.
“Open spaces like this are crucial to help control flooding and erosion but also provide clean air, noise reduction and natural spaces for recreation in urban settings. Restoring and maintaining urban green areas such as Garfield Gulch is an integral part of creating great cities where people want to live,” said Kory Kramer, South Sound Green Cities project manager for Cascade Land Conservancy. “By being a part of the Green Tacoma Partnership, Metro Parks Tacoma and the City of Tacoma are playing a leadership role in the region. And with the enthusiastic support from companies like DaVita and their employees, we have a truly winning combination for our community and for the environment.”
The Green Tacoma Partnership brings the City of Tacoma, Metro Parks, Tacoma Audubon Society, Cascade Land Conservancy, citizens, educational organizations, non-profits and businesses together to work towards a viable healthy network of natural spaces throughout Tacoma.
