A New Wrinkle: Lip Lines Caused by Water Bottles

You Don't Have to Light Up to Get Smokers' Lips

(Washington, DC) - The lips don’t lie. Those telltale wrinkles around the mouth are usually an obvious sign - someone’s a smoker! But prominent Washington D.C. dermatologist Dr. Marilyn Berzin (www.dcdermdocs.com) has detected an alarming new aging trend: smokers’ lips caused by water bottles.

Berzin started investigating after noticing numerous patients complaining about the appearance of unsightly “smokers’ lips,” despite the fact that they don’t smoke. Then what was causing the problem? Dr. Berzin quizzed her patients, and it turned out they all had a thirst for water bottles, especially the types with sport nozzles.

Dr. Berzin says the continuous pursing of the lips around the nozzles has the same effect as puffing on cigarettes. It’s almost like constantly frowning. Over time, the wear and tear starts to show as fine lines form on the skin around the mouth. The lips are one of the first places on the face to show aging because they are an extremely delicate part of the body.

Fortunately, Dr. Berzin says there are numerous ways to reverse these signs of aging. It involves restoring definition to the border around the lips. This is often accomplished with dermal fillers, such as Restylane and Juvaderm. These products fill some of the lines and contour the lips. Fraxel laser treatment can also be used as part of a combination treatment. Botox is sometimes recommended.

But the first thing to do, says Dr. Berzin, is cut back on the use of those omnipresent water bottles. “Drink from a glass, or carry around a thermos. Yes, it’s important to hydrate, but let’s throw some cold water on the constant use of sports nozzles.

Dr. Berzin is available to discuss and this new phenomenon. We can also assist in providing patients to interview. Media contact: Contact: Marc Silverstein at (410) 963-2345 or marc@onthemarcmedia.com
