Long time Newport News, Va. native, David Payne, began his career as a Labor and Employment Lawyer. For 12 years Payne focused on his vocation in the field of law, pushing his true calling to the wayside. After much deliberation Payne, husband and step-father of two, decided to follow his dream and culinary passion.
Payne studied Classical French Cuisines at The Culinary Institute of Virginia, from where he graduated in 2006. He then went on to become a Sous Chef at Virginia Beach’s own Bella Monte. From there, Payne’s artistic talents and love for people were not left unnoticed; he was quickly offered the title of Chef de Cuisine for the well-known Argyles Restaurant in Kitty Hawk, NC. After spending time in North Carolina, Payne sought new opportunities closer to home and joined The Chamberlin team in March of 2011 as Sous Chef. Despite his success, Payne still knows that running a kitchen is not simply done by giving orders. Payne is not shy to bus tables, take requests, and mingle with guests alongside his dedicated team. “I’m honored to have been offered the position as Executive Chef,” Payne says, “The diversity of clientele offer both challenging and rewarding returns, as well as the creative freedoms most chefs can only dream to have!”
