From Mozart to Muse at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2012

Innovative Swedish classical-crossover duo playing 5 days at the Edinburgh Fringe

What happens when two well-established classical musicians – one Scot and one Swede – decide it's time to step away from the symphony orchestra and plug their instruments into loop machines, laptops and loudspeakers to play the music they love, whether it's classical, pop, folk or film music?

"Essens:1 demystify classical music. Their stage presence is more reminiscent of a relaxed indie band than their more serious classical music backgrounds." Helsingborgs Dagblad, Sweden

essens:1 is a duo with Ian Peaston on electric violin and Per Johansson on electric clarinet. By wiring their classical instruments up to shiny laptops and stomping on chunky pedals they loop together a thousand unexpected sounds from a breathtakingly eclectic range of genres for audiences of all ages – and all completely live!

“They move like lightning from century to century, far away from the traditional sphere of chamber music. A breathtaking mixture of genres, effects and influences. These two guys love everything that music has to offer.”  TTELA, Sweden

In just one hour they move from Mozart to Muse by way of Copland, Queen, Klezmer and film music by Hans Zimmer and Yann Tiersen. Add to this dizzying mix two completely new works by Sweden's hottest composers: Tobias Broström's melodious and evocative Dreamscape, and Stefan Klaverdal's pulsating Bach remix Misrau Ca. And it's all lusciously loud, looped and live!
