11.04.2009 – FALMOUTH, MA – The town of Falmouth’s designation as a Preserve America Community will be celebrated at a free public event at noon on November 15 at Highfield Hall, 56 Highfield Drive (off Depot Avenue).
Among those invited are U.S. Representative William Delahunt, Massachusetts Senate President Therese Murray, State Representatives Matt Patrick and Tim Madden, five Town Selectman, President of the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce Jay Zavala, and Dr. Steven Murawski, Director for Scientific Programs and Chief Science Advisor, National Marine Fisheries Services, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
“NOAA and its predecessor agencies have had an historic and continuing involvement in this community. Historic preservation and interpretation, especially when they lead to recognition and heritage tourism, provide a community significant economic, educational and cultural benefits.” Murawski said. “Sustainable preservation is not a cost for maintaining the past; it is an investment in the future. Preserve America Communities are to be commended for their dedication to historic preservation and their visions for civic improvement. Congratulations to the town of Falmouth on its designation.”
Through this prestigious designation, the town becomes eligible for Preserve America Grants and other assistance to its historic preservation and heritage tourism efforts. The town of Falmouth is the first designated Preserve America Community on Cape Cod and the 20th in Massachusetts.
“Designating the Town of Falmouth as a Preserve America Community now strengthens the partnership between town departments and commissions, local historical organizations and the federal government in order to protect part of Cape Cod’s rich history and unique culture,” Mary Pat Flynn, Chairperson of Falmouth Selectmen said. “Through this partnership, generations of residents and visitors can now learn more about the numerous natural and historic gifts Falmouth has to offer.”
The designation is further distinguished by the fact that it is among the earliest Preserve America Community certificates to bear the signature of Mrs. Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States, who signs the certificates and the letters sent to new communities notifying them of their designations.
“President Obama and I want to congratulate all of the Preserve America Communities and thank them for their commitment to protecting and strengthening America’s cultural and natural heritage,” Mrs. Obama said.
The Preserve America program is a federal effort that began in 2003 to encourage and support community efforts for the preservation and enjoyment of America’s priceless cultural and natural heritage.
“The town looks forward to being an active participant as a Preserve America Community and to presenting projects for funding that will preserve the unique culture and history of the Upper Cape,” said Chairperson Flynn, in accepting the designation on behalf of Falmouth.
The program is administered by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation in partnership with other federal agencies, notably including the departments of the Interior, Commerce, and Agriculture. Its goals include a greater shared knowledge about the nation’s past; strengthened regional identities and local pride; increased local participation in preserving the country’s cultural and natural heritage assets; and, support for the economic vitality of communities. Preserve America began as a White House initiative. Nearly 800 cities, counties, tribes, and neighborhoods in all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands have been designated to date. See www.preserveamerica.gov for more information.
