11.11.2008 – EUGENE, Ore. -"It's about women, and it's about being empowered," says Cindy Ingram, creator and organizer of Grrrlz Rock!, a November concert series held in Eugene, Ore.
Grrrlz Rock! is the largest female concert series in the United States, rooted from community support and volunteer love.
The 12th show of Grrrlz Rock! 2008 will bring together international and local rhythms at the Tango Center. The performers will include 2001 Oregon Idol winner, Debra Arlyn, local composer Rebecca Oswald, and Cuban-native artist Jessie Marquez.
Performer Debra Arlyn, 23, has come a long way since winning Clear Channel's Oregon Idol in 2001. Her career as a singer and songwriter soon took flight from Philomath, Ore., to the heart of music itself in, Nashville, Tenn. Now that she has numerous titles under her belt, three CDs, featured spots on Portland's PDXposed series, and her song's debut on national television, Arlyn is nothing less than Oregon's gem. "My style is a little bit of R&B mixed with pop and some R&B rock," says Arlyn in her interview with PDXposed.
Composer and Tango Center Music Director Rebecca Oswald understands the road to success, much like Arlyn, who has been a freelance pianist in Houston, Texas, for 14 years. Since receiving her MM in Music Composition from the University of Oregon School of Music in 2001, Oswald has written numerous works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles and full orchestras. This summer Oswald featured her work in the Oregon Bach Festival, a highly recognized and acclaimed event.
While Arlyn and Oswald both continue to grow from the beginnings of their musical careers, artist Jessie Marquez captures the essence of her Cuban heritage in a style called "filin." Marquez started her musical career in Havana, Cuba, in 2003 with members of the Afro-Cuban All Stars. Her first recording, "Sana Locura," reached the top of salsa and latin charts in Europe and the United States. Marquez spent her career singing in Cuban clubs, cabarets, theaters, street parties, television and radio. She brings cultural rhythms to her new home in Eugene where she plays with jazz guitarist Mike Denny.
Offering a little bit of something for everyone, from the lover of pop and R&B, to a listener of relaxed classical piano, to the invigorating beats of cuban dance, the Tango Center show has it.
This is an all-ages event, starting at 3 p.m. with a $6 cover charge.
