08.01.2009 – Sir Paul McCartney is rumoured to have been the secret bassist on "President of Pop" Austin Washington's "live" song "Greatest Joy".
How could it be a secret, if it was played live? Simple, says Austin - "On the night the song was recorded, we were missing two members of our band, due to missed plane. The organisers wouldn't let us switch our slot. We decided to play, anyway. Half un-plugged. A few people said it was a good vocal and vibe. So we decided to put it out there...and just overdub one of the guitars and the bass later."
A paparazzi caught a snap of Sir Paul in the vicinity of the President of Pop's basement studio, and the rumour took full force when McCartney's distinctive bass-style - as much melodic as rhythmic - was heard on the track
Austin Washington's musical fame started when he did what lots of us probably do - he jumped around in his bedroom, pretending to be a rock star. However, three things separate Austin from most air-guitarists (or in Austin's case, air-singers/guitarists/pianists). First, Austin sings his own songs. Second, Austin was said to be "the greatest new songwriter" by a writer for Rolling Stone Magazine. Third, as a result of adolescent good-luck, Austin Washington registered the most popular music URL on earth - PopMusic.com.
"Every day thousands of people think - hmm...what would happen if I typed "PopMusic" into my browser. More people than you can imagine. Obviously, by this point, we've got our regulars - from around the world. According to weblogs, more people have heard our music on PopMusic.com than watched The Beatles on Ed Sullivan. I've had regular 'platinum' songs - well, several million downloads and streams - but never did a lick of advertising or promotion."
As word of his "secret" bedroom-based world-wide fame got out, "President of Pop" Austin Washington began to receive offers to play at festivals and other live gigs, as well as introductions to rock royalty, such as, rumour has it, former Beatle Paul McCartney. A confluence of these two things - playing at festivals, and befriending rock royalty - seems to have led to the rumoured collaboration on "Greatest Joy".
Soon-to-be former student Austin Washington was recently called a "future world leader" by the BBC's Politics Today program, and has appeared countless times on the BBC, The Discovery Channel, and all major US television networks, discussing his favourite topic - how much more important it is to be a hero, than a celebrity.
As for the truth of the rumour, Austin only says "I dunno - the story's been floating around since April first. I can't seen any reason not to believe it. Can you?"
