09.11.2009 – Habitat for Humanity of Greater Los Angeles (HFH GLA) will commemorate the first National Day of Service and Remembrance by pausing for moments of remembrance at all three of its active volunteer locations on 9/11. In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which, for the first time, officially recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. To help recognize the significance of 9/11 HFH GLA has partnered with local companies who are dedicating the day to service by bringing their employees out to volunteer.
“We are so proud to have been chosen to be a United We Serve partner for this important event,” says Erin Rank, President/CEO, HFH GLA. “The events of that day brought Americans together in a remarkable spirit of unity and what better way to honor those lost than to recommit ourselves to serving our neighbors and our communities.”
Volunteers will be helping HFH GLA in three of the organization’s volunteer locations. HFH GLA’s new team of AmeriCorps members will be working to repair a home for a deserving family on an A Brush With Kindness site in Los Angeles and all staff members will participate in one of the ceremonies that will be offered in the morning. Corporate partner Salesforce.com is bringing twenty-five employees to help build a home in Downey for a single mother and new partner Akamai Technologies will be volunteering at the Home Improvement Store in honor of their charismatic co-founder, Danny Lewin who was lost on 9/11.
“Akamai and its employees are committed to corporate citizenship by giving back through volunteerism and community service,” said Debra Canner, Senior Vice President, Human Resources at Akamai Technologies.
“As a company, it is important for us to provide employees with an opportunity to participate in a National Day of Service and Remembrance, and we are honored to help support the very important efforts of Habitat for Humanity.”
September 11 continues to evoke strong emotions and has become a symbol of national patriotism with a call to improve our communities. This year, on September 11, the President, the Corporation for National and Community Service, the United We Serve initiative and the 9/11 families will ask all Americans to remember that Tuesday eight years ago and recommit to service in their communities throughout the year. Towards that end, HFH GLA builds throughout Greater Los Angeles Tuesday through Saturday, all year long and offers a variety of volunteer opportunities on and off the build site, for more information visit www.habitatla.org.
