Holocaust Memoir Called a Hoax. New Publisher in Serious Talks About New Rosenblat Book

Herman Roseblat's memoir is cancelled, but the movie is still a go, and a book based on the movie is in discussion

01.02.2009 – White Plains, NY. York House Press has entered into a tentative agreement with Atlantic Overseas Productions to publish a book based on the company's script for its $25 million movie production, The Flower of The Fence, which is set to begin production in 2009.

The motion picture is based on the life of Holocaust survivor, Herman Rosenblat, his ordeal in a Nazi concentration sub-camp of Buchenwald, and his celebrated love story with his fellow Holocaust survivor and wife of 50 years, Roma. Mr. Rosenblat's memoir, "Angel at The Fence", was to precede the motion picture with a scheduled worldwide release in February 2009, by publisher Berkley Books, a unit of Penguin Group. Apparently swayed by attacks on Mr. Rosenblat's memoir, and amid cries of a hoax, Berkley Books, as reported by the New York Times, announced its decision recently to cancel the book.

A spokesperson for York House Press said this: "Mr. Rosenblat chose to integrate a number of false memories into his work. In doing so, he drew savage attacks of what is otherwise a credible, heart-wrenching, and verifiable account of his time as a young boy in the death camps of Germany, the horrors he experienced there, and the love affair with his wife that has sustained him for 50 years.

York House Press is in serious discussion to publish a work of fiction in early spring that is based on the motion picture, "The Flower at The Fence". The screenplay for the movie was written at the same time as the memoir and is rooted in the true events of Mr. Rosenblat's life and love story. It is our intention to ensure that any new book, based on the screenplay, rises to the proper levels of artistic value, ethical conduct and social responsibility."
A more complete statement from the publishers is available at www.yorkhousepress.com.

President of Atlantic Overseas Productions, Harris Salomon said: "We are pleased that the story of Herman Rosenblat will be told to readers worldwide in spite of the controversy that has ensued over the past weeks. We believe this important work, regardless of its shortcomings, can challenge, educate and enlighten readers all over the world about the horrors of the Holocaust. We hope that the book and the movie will create a lasting and indelible impression and understanding about the horrors of war, and inspire a greater desire for peace."

Atlantic Overseas Production is a motion picture production company with offices in New York and London. "Flower of The Fence" is a $25 million production.
