10.13.2009 – Solana Beach, Calif. -- A great idea is the easiest -- and smallest -- part of the enormous effort required to take a consumer product to market successfully, according to Phil Baker, a long-time technology-product developer.
Baker is the author of the new book, “From Concept to Consumer: How to Turn Ideas into Money,” (2009, Financial Times Press, $24.99), in which he walks his readers through the process of product development and explains the crucial links among aspects like design, engineering, testing, legal, manufacturing, marketing, and distribution.
“It’s all based on what I’ve seen and experienced during my three-decade career,” Baker says of the book. “I share my know-how and explain what’s really involved in transforming a clever concept into a financially successful product that people will want to buy.”
Baker can point to 30 patents, several industry awards, and many development projects at consumer-electronics companies like Apple, Polaroid, and Seiko to back up his practical advice. Not only did he work at big companies, Baker was an entrepreneur, too. He co-founded Think Outside, a San Diego-area company that invented and manufactured the most popular accessory ever -- the Stowaway folding keyboard -- for Palm Pilots and similar personal digital assistants.
After selling his company, Baker became a business and product-development consultant, the technology columnist for the San Diego Daily Transcript, and a technology commentator on KOGO-AM.
“I wrote the book because I could find no other that provided the practical experience that people need,” Baker says. “The response has been terrific -- from individuals with an idea who want to know what to do next, to large companies looking for faster ways of bringing their products to market using Asian resources. The book is also being used in several graduate business classes.”
Baker holds a master’s degree in engineering from Yale, an MBA from Northeastern University, and a bachelor’s in physics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is a 2005 recipient of WPI’s Robert H. Goddard Alumni Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement, and was named a San Diego Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for Consumer Products in 2001. He and his wife live in Solana Beach, Calif.
