11.06.2009 – Ka’anapali, HI, November 5, 2009 – Cirque Polynesia’s most death-defying performance may not be on its high-wire but rather an investment into a custom-built outdoor theatre scheduled to open Monday, November 9, at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa.
The new venue was designed to enhance the overall Cirque Polynesia experience by creating an outdoor stage for guests to enjoy both an evening under the stars while experiencing the 75-minute performance. The venue can seat up to 500 guests.
Cirque Polynesia originally opened on June 1, 2009, at the Hyatt Regency’s Monarchy Ballroom. The show is offered at 300 travel desks and reservation centers throughout Maui. More than 100 shows have played for thousands of guests to date.
“Cirque Polynesia’s success gave us the added confidence to build a dedicated theatre to display the magic and awe of cirque,” explained Cornell “Tuffy” Nicholas, Producer, Cirque Polynesia. “We thought, ‘what could be better than mesmerizing audiences with jaw-dropping cirque acts accentuated by Maui’s natural beauty?’”
The construction lasted about one and half months and required hiring a dozen contractors and 50 employees from various construction-related fields. The distinct entrance is adorned by two over-sized tikis and the venue is enclosed by a bamboo fence for added privacy.
“As supporters and fans of the show, we’re very proud of the rapid success of Cirque Polynesia,” said Michael Jokovich, General Manager, Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa. “The new theatre is a terrific example of our resort’s one-of-kind entertainment experience unlike any other on the island.”
Cirque Polynesia now offers a dinner and show package starting at $99. Dinners are at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa’s award-winning ‘Umalu restaurant. The dinner includes a three-course meal with a selection of fresh Maui produce, Mahi Mahi, prime rib and sesame-orange chicken stir-fry. All meals include lilikoi-mango cheesecake for desert and soft drinks.
Cirque Polynesia is a 75-minute show that tells the tale of two worlds coming together on a tropical stormy night. The people of Polynesia celebrate a gathering, or “mele,” with a rhythmic song and dance of the Pacific. The thumping drumbeats mesmerize the magical tribe of Cirque to join the people of Polynesia for an enchanted evening that changes both their lives forever.
Cirque artists from Hawaii, Russia, Germany, Kazakhstan and Moldova (Eastern Europe) perform everything from high-wire acts, contortion, aerial illusionists and acrobats, daredevil balancing, split second quick-change, hoops and jump-rope. The show is superbly complimented with the stand-up comedy of “Vili” – Hawaii’s most beloved warrior.
The VIP seating, considered the best seats in the house, are the first five rows from the stage. All other seats are Premier viewing.
Cirque Polynesia plays five nights a week from Monday through Friday. Guests can check-in and be seated as early as 6 p.m. with the show beginning at 7 p.m.
Show pricing will remain unchanged. There are special rates for Kama’aina and Keiki’s (under age 12).
