Blazing the trail for gross-out humor, Garbage Pail Kids are a series of collectible stickers first produced in 1985 by The Topps Company. The series was the brainchild of Topps consultant and Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Art Spiegelman, who came up with the product idea after the success of his earlier creations, Garbage Candy and Wacky Packages. An antidote to the Cabbage Patch Kids craze, the Garbage Pail Kids parodied saccharine mainstream culture with twisted jokes that ranged from the surreal to the disgusting. Nothing was off-limits and the stickers were full of gags about boogers, pimples, and passing gas. While this hardly sounds like a recipe for success – kids loved them! Soon, they were the collecting craze of the ‘80s. Nervous parents and teachers had them banned in schools, which sparked widespread media attention and increased popularity.
Each sticker featured a wide-eyed Garbage Pail Kid suffering some embarrassing or terrible fate. Key to the humor and the success of the product were the character names printed on the fronts of the cards. Rich in wordplay, kids scrambled to find their own names (or their friends’ names!) among Garbage Pail Kids’ hapless gang of misfits: Adam Bomb, Potty Scotty, Ghastley Ashley and hundreds of others.
In 2003, Topps reintroduced the Garbage Pail Kids brand with a set of all-new stickers. Appealing to a whole new generation, they were an instant hit. News organizations were quick to cover the return of this long-cherished brand. Seven new series were released between 2003 and 2009 and a brand new “Flashback” series will hit stores in Spring 2010.
"As kids growing up in the 1980s, my friends and I loved the first Garbage Pail Kids, and it is an absolute honor to bring the original Garbage Pail Kids artwork to an exciting new medium," according to Kendall Schoenrock, Co-Founder of LTL PRINTS. "Some incredibly talented artists worked on Garbage Pail Kids over the years, and today these delightfully offensive images are available as giant wall graphics from LTL PRINTS."
"Before South Park and Beavis & Butthead, there were Garbage Pail Kids," according to Eric Liebler, Global Brand Licensing & Development at the Topps Company. "Over the last 25 years, Garbage Pail Kids have become pop-culture icons, and we are extremely excited to be partnering with LTL PRINTS to bring larger than life-size versions of these classic characters to empty walls everywhere."
LTL PRINTS today launched Garbage Pail Kids Series I (77 in all!) as premium wall graphics. Additional sets of Garbage Pail Kids wall graphics will be released by LTL PRINTS monthly, commencing in February 2010.
