RTT USA and Art Center Explore Adaptive Environments

04.27.2009 – PASADENA, Calif.- The most recent Material Intersections podcast coproduced by RTT USA, Inc. (RTT), a leader in realtime 3D visualization software and services for product design and marketing, and Art Center College of Design’s Color, Materials and Trends Exploration Laboratory (CMTEL), will focus on the topic of adaptive environments, or environments that react to external conditions. This is a departure from previous podcast episodes that highlighted specific materials.

Michele Hess, director of RTT’s Material & Color Connection, and Marshall Hamachi, CMTEL’s associate director, lead the podcasts. In this latest podcast, the duo explores how to integrate digital media (video that responds to stimuli like human interaction, light and sound) with physical forms, such as the interior of a car or a wall.

Hess and Hamachi utilize RTT’s proprietary software, RTT DeltaGen, to produce 3D visualizations of the adaptive environments to show how they react and change when affected by light or human touch. Viewers will also hear Kenneth Cameron and Charles Hellwig, founders of the design studio Fourwall, discuss two concepts: an adaptive automotive interior and an adaptive architectural wall.

“In the architectural world, a structure is traditionally created to remain static and unchanged for years,” said Hess. “In this podcast, we use 3D technology to explore the idea of an adaptive environment and how a form that interacts with something external, such as light or human touch, continuously changes rather than remaining stagnant.”

The podcasts can be accessed on Art Center’s CMTEL Web site at

Launched in December 2008, the goal of Material Intersections is to bring visual inspiration to the art and design community by exploring a different material trend each month. The podcasts connect the tactile and technical worlds in an inspiring format combining thoughtful narrative and rich visuals using RTT’s proprietary technology, RTT DeltaGen. Many podcasts feature interviews with designers who provide insight on various materials they use during the design application process.

Upcoming podcast topics include:
• Sustainability
• Slow Tech
• Lightweight
• Durable
