Grassroots Campaign Partners with VFW Foundation to Launch Veterans Day Appreciation Campaign

"Why We Celebrate" & the VFW Foundation Will Collect Virtual Thank-You Notes During November

Why We Celebrate – a social media-driven campaign designed to express gratitude to the military and their families -- is partnering with the VFW Foundation to organize a national, virtual campaign this November to show appreciation for America’s veterans.

“When we launched Why We Celebrate this summer, our hope was to encourage people to take a minute to reflect on and show appreciation for the sacrifices made by the military and their families,” explained Heather Whaling, president of Geben Communication and co-organizer of Why We Celebrate.

Mike Whaling, president of 30 Lines and co-organizer of Why We Celebrate added: “The initial campaign exceeded our expectations, touching thousands of people. Partnering with the VFW Foundation enables us to reach even more people – making sure active-duty and retired military personnel know how much we appreciate their sacrifices.”

Get Involved: Return the Favor

The main goal of the month-long Return the Favor campaign in honor of Veterans Day is to collect online thank-you notes that express gratitude to the men and women who serve their country (both past and present). During November, the VFW Foundation will host a multimedia wall on its website, www.returnthefavor.org, which will pull in thank-you notes from around the web.

Participating in the campaign is simple:

  • Tweet your gratitude with the #WhyWeCelebrate or #ReturntheFavor hashtags
  • Write a blog post and share the link on the wall
  • Upload a video or photo to the wall
  • Share the Return the Favor video message
  • Share photos, videos and memories on the Why We Celebrate Facebook page
  • Make a tax-deductible donation to support the VFW Foundation’s programs and services. Just $10 allows 25 servicemen overseas to make a phone call home to their loved ones.

“The VFW Foundation sought out Why We Celebrate as a partner because we loved what they did this year to recognize the meaning of Independence Day. We want to create a similar response and sentiment in recognition of Veterans Day on Nov. 11, said John Lowe, VFW Foundation Acting Director . “Our troops always step up when needed and now we are asking Americans to ‘return the favor.’”
