The dinner honors the legacy of Whitney M. Young, Jr. the former executive director of the National Urban League who brought the League into the civil rights arena during the 1960s. As the Urban League of Hampton Roads’ signature event, this dinner will honor individuals and corporations in the community that uphold ideals of equal opportunity, diversity and justice.
“This is such a shining moment for the Urban League,” said Edith White, president and CEO of the Urban League of Hampton Roads. “With this campaign, we get the opportunity to celebrate the individuals and organizations that have supported the League and helped to empower our efforts. We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate with this commemorative dinner.”
“GEICO is honored to be a part of the Urban League’s 100th anniversary celebration,” said Joe Thomas, regional vice president of GEICO’s Virginia Beach office. “The Urban League of Hampton Roads does such a great job of giving back to the local community and we proudly support them in their efforts.”
The 100 Lives Changed celebration will continue throughout the year with a June financial freedom workshop, followed by a golf tournament, the National Urban League Conference in Washington, D.C. in July, and a local community symposium moderated by commentator Roland S. Martin of CNN and TV One in November. Below is a schedule of events:
