02.27.2009 – In addition to the 11 outstanding women being honored, The Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama will honor 11 girls at their 16th Annual Women of Distinction Luncheon, Friday, March 13, 2009 at The Harbert Center.
The 11 Senior and Ambassador Girl Scouts being honored at the luncheon for earning their Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting, are:
•Christen Blackledge-Hueytown High School: The Youth Shall Lead Them: A Walking Program for Youth and Adults
•Lindsey Bloom-Oak Mountain High School: Play It Again Medical Supplies
•Hanna Cree-Chelsea High School: Help for Hanna
•Kate Horton-Vestavia Hills High School, Prayer Garden at Southminster Presbyterian Church
•Erika Hubbard-Moody High School: Smoke Alarm Drive
•Claire Lewallyn-Vestavia Hills High School/Auburn University: Hands-on Outdoor Garden and Sitting Area
•Raven Macon-John Carroll Catholic High School: The Basic Essential Health Fair
•Nancy McColl-Vestavia Hills High School: Pathways to a Better Community;
•Rachel McMullen-Thompson High School: Going Green at THS
•Casie Morris-Gadsden City High School: Revitalization of the Ritz
•Shannon O'Sheal-Vestavia Hills High School/College of Charleston: Blankets for the Needy.
These young ladies from around the community will be recognized for their leadership and service projects. The Gold Award requires over 65 hours of planning, community service and evaluations.
This is the largest fundraising event of the year. Proceeds from the Women of Distinction Luncheon provide direct support to Girl Scouts in North-Central Alabama. The signature sponsor is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama. Primary Benefactors include: Alagasco/Energen, Balch and Bingham, Brookwood Medical Center, EBSCO Industries, Compass Bank, Mercedes Benz, and Vulcan Materials Company. Many other local companies and individuals have generously sponsored additional corporate tables.
