From Hops Warehouse to Hopmonk Tavern Sonoma

Heritage Salvage Repurposes Wood Giving It New Life

December 02, 2011 -- Petaluma, CA. -- Hopmonk Tavern founder Dean Biersch opened a second location for his beer garden and tavern in Sonoma, California to overflowing crowds and attention last week. The interior of the historic building is designed with reclaimed wood provided by Heritage Salvage including resourced wood from a Yakima Washington Hops Warehouse as flooring and recycled bleacher boards with original seat assignments as tabletops, bar top and bar back.

“Choosing to bring in reclaimed materials to create our space made perfect sense. All the unique touches, row letters from University bleachers on our tables and bar, with original plaques, writing on the flooring, provide a warm feeling with stories to tell, authentic trumps all. It is great to be part of what Heritage Salvage does.” enthused Dean Biersch.

Continuing in tradition of brewpubs, Hopmonk Tavern Sonoma opened Wednesday, November 24, 2010 offering domestic and international beers on tap and by the bottle, wine, traditional tavern food and venue for music. Sonoma, in heart of wine country, was once beer territory, home to the country’s first microbrewery in 1979.

Located in a restored 1888 Sonoma farmhouse, the Tavern boasts a friendly sustainable interior. From Tavern flooring, outside decking, table and bar tops to beer garden benches and accents the wood is resourced and reclaimed, designed and crafted by Heritage Salvage team.

Reclaimed wood from 1925 Yakima Washington Hops Warehouse was resourced into shiplap flooring and 2 x12 joists were repurposed into outdoor beer garden deck.

Other ingredients from old structures, which found new life include following transformations:
• Senator Kerr Douglas Fir Decking for outdoor beer garden
• Southern Illinois University (SIU) Indoor Gymnasium Row Letter Bleacher Boards ? Indoor Table tops
• SIU Bleacher Boards & Sequoia High School Bar top and Bar Back
• Reclaimed Douglas Fir, Friedman’s Bone Yard Beer Garden Tables & Benches?
• Sonoma Valley High School Bleachers (3 blocks from Hopmonk Tavern) Metal accents on beer garden tables and benches.

“It was a pure pleasure working with Dean and his team. I wanted to see reclaimed materials make their way into this Hopmonk location, and am overjoyed with the outcome. It is impeccably designed by Kim Betzina and built by Jeffrey Mills of Tamalpais Construction and our resourced and handcrafted materials add to the overall ambience beautifully”, offers Michael Bug Deakin, Heritage Salvage.
