Month Features Bug Day, The Garden Plate, and Movies in the Garden

July 3, 2012 (Boise, ID) The Idaho Botanical Garden is in full bloom and offers a variety of activities to educate, cultivate and celebrate. August features Movies in the Garden, Bug Day, and new this season, The Garden Plate: Cooking Demonstrations.

Great Garden Escape Concerts
6:00 pm at the Idaho Botanical Garden
$10 non-member; $7 Members

Summer evenings are cooler in the Garden where you can experience the best of Idaho with local music, food, beer, and wine. Enjoy food selections from Willowcreek Grill, Prepared Catering, or bring your own picnic. Don’t forget a blanket or low-back chair. Concerts take place rain or shine.

Movies in the Garden
$5 non-member, $3 Members
Gate opens at 7:00 pm and movies being at dusk. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket, and enjoy movies on the giant outdoor big screen. Food and beverage vendors will provide snacks and summer treats.
Wednesday, August 8 – THE GOONIES are a group of seven young friends from a small Northwest town who find themselves on a thrilling underground adventure filled with humor and heart-pounding peril as they seek the secrets behind the treasure of the notorious pirate, One-Eyed Willie.
Wednesday, August 22 – Hairspray. Adapted from the Broadway play, Tracy Turnblad is a teenager with huge hair and an obsession with the Link Larken and the Corny Collins Show. She sings and dances her way into his heart and onto the show only to decide that the race segregation of the show is unfair and thus fights to integrate the show.

Lecture Series: Chinese in Idaho: Bogus Basin
Tuesday, August 14; 7:00 pm
Free to Members and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Members; $5 non member, $3 Seniors
Priscilla Wegars will discuss how and why early Chinese immigrants came to Idaho and especially to the Boise Basin, detailing their positive and negative experiences. The program will feature a hands-on exhibit of typical Chinese artifacts from the University of Idaho’s Asian American Comparative Collection. Supported by the Idaho Humanities Council, the state-based program for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.

Culinary Herbs
Wednesday, August 15; 7:00 pm
$15 Members; $20 non member. Pre-registration required.
Culinary herbs are easy to grow, provide health benefits and make food taste terrific. Garden Education Director Elizabeth Dickey will discuss how to grow annual and perennial herbs, how to preserve herbs for future use, and share a variety of ways to use herbs in cooking.

The Garden Plate
Friday, August 17, 7:00 pm
Free to Members; $5 non member
The Idaho Botanical Garden is affiliated with the national Let’s Move! initiative that is mobilizing cities around the country to reduce childhood obesity, make healthy food more accessible, provide healthy food in schools, and increase physical activity. The Garden Plate demonstration features Chef Tyler Smith from Create Common Good and will provide inspiration for using healthy, seasonal vegetables as part of our daily diets.

Leaf Printing
Saturday, August 18, 10:00 am
$15 Members; $20 non member. Pre-registration required.
An activity fun for adult and child pairs to work together to create a single lasting work of botanical art using fabric paint. Participants need to bring one pillowcase or light-colored t-shirt that has been laundered at least once. Registration includes both participants.

Bug Day
Saturday, August 25; 9:00 am to 3:00 pm
$4 members, $8 non-members, $4 children ages 5-12, kids under 4 are free.
Learn about the exciting world of bugs in an adventurous environment. Earn a “Certificate of Bugology,” purchase edible insects, play bug bingo, participate in Insect Olympics, catch live bugs, and meet the experts. Fun for the whole family.

Uncorked in the Garden
Tuesday, August 28; 6:00 pm
6:00 pm at the Idaho Botanical Garden
$5 non-member; Free to Members
Take advantage of the evening serenity at the Idaho Botanical Garden with Uncorked.  Stroll through the Garden while listening to local musicians the Sally Craven Trio and sampling wines from Cinder Winery.



About Idaho Botanical Garden:
Idaho Botanical Garden is open daily from 9am-5pm, from 10 am – 6 pm on weekends and till dusk on Tuesday and Fridays throughout summer.  General admission will be closed to the public all day on August 2, 6, 19, 24, and 29 for Outlaw Field Summer Concerts. 

General admission is $5 for non-members, $3 for seniors, and children between 5-12 years old are $3. General admission is free to members.

The Idaho Botanical Garden is dedicated fostering a love of nature and developing intellectual curiosity in people of all ages though botanical collections, music and art events, educational programs and seasonal celebrations.
