May 23, 2012 (Boise, ID) – The Idaho Botanical Garden presents a variety of classes to educate people of all ages. June is full of diverse experiences including a youth writing workshop, water gardens, or music in the Garden. The Garden is closed all day on Sunday, June 10 and Tuesday, June 26. Below is the June 2012 schedule of programs:

Tai Chi in the Garden
Saturday, June 2; 10:00 am

Free for Members; Non-members $5 per session. Pre-registration required.
Tai Chi, a meditative practice incorporating slow movement, has been described as magical and as poetry in motion. Provided by long-time practitioner Jeff Rylee, participants are encouraged to become centered with the invigorating morning sounds and scents of the Meditation Garden. The class is every Saturday morning and goes through September 29, except August 25 and September 1.

Backyard Chickens
Saturday, June 2; 10:00 am
$10 Members; $15 non member. Pre-registration required.
Author, awards-winning humor columnist Gretchen Anderson will introduce her passion for chickens. Find out why so many people are getting back to basics by keeping backyard chickens.

Big Splash in a Small Space – Miniature Water Gardens
Thursday, June 14; 7:00 pm
$10 Members; $15 non member. Pre-registration required.
Get creative and almost anything can be made into a water feature: wash tubs, half barrels, glazed pots, or old pipes. Attendees will learn how to create a water-tight container, choose a pump, and select, display, and care for water plants.

Romance of Roses
Saturday, June 16; 10:00 am
$10 Members; $15 non member. Pre-registration required.
Learn about the Garden’s heirloom rose varieties and how their individual traits can work in any garden. The history of specific roses and historical uses of roses in general will also be discussed.

Concrete Leaf Workshop, Part I
Part I: Saturday, June 16; 9:00 am
Part II: Wednesday, June 20, 6:00 pm
$20 Members; $25 non member. Pre-registration required.
Create a garden ornament using concrete and a large leaf. This two-part workshop includes all material to make a concrete leaf to be used as a small birdbath or garden decoration.

Lecture Series: Savory and Sizzling Recipes
Tuesday, June 19; 7:00 pm
Free to Members and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute Members; $5 non member, $3 Seniors
The first of the season Lecture Series supported by the Idaho Humanities Council, the state-based program for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Cherie Buckner-Webb and Clarisse Maxell will present information offered by the cook book from the Idaho Black History Museum. The book captures a sampling of the distinct and diverse flavors of the Boise community. Based on narratives provided by recipe contributors, the speakers will explain how the hallmark of African American cooking is improvisation. 

Uncorked in the Garden

Tuesday, June 19
Take advantage of the evening serenity at the Idaho Botanical Garden with Uncorked.  Stroll through the Garden while listening to local band Hollow Wood and sampling wines from Indian Creek.

Great Garden Escape Concerts

Summer evenings are cooler in the Garden where you can experience the best of Idaho with local music, food, beer, and wine. Enjoy food selections from Willowcreek Grill, Prepared Catering, or bring your own picnic. Don’t forget a blanket or low-back chair. Concerts take place rain or shine.

The Garden Plate
Friday, June 22, 7:00 pm
Free to Members; $5 non member
The Idaho Botanical Garden is affiliated with the national Let’s Move! initiative that is mobilizing cities around the country to reduce childhood obesity, make healthy food more accessible, provide healthy food in schools, and increase physical activity. The Garden Plate demonstration will provide inspiration for using healthy, seasonal vegetables as part of our daily diets.

Youth Writing Workshop (ages 9-12 years old)

$15 Members; $20 non member. Pre-registration required.
These workshops are for 9 to 12 year olds that enjoy writing. The sessions will focus on sharpening skills in observing and writing about nature. Attendees will practice using all their senses to explore the world around them, and then put these experiences into works. Each session will cover different topics. Attendees need to prepare to be outside and bring a water bottle, along with their own writing supplies.

Garden Tour 2012

Sunday, June 24
$20 admission and tickets can be purchased at the Idaho Botanical Garden or any of the private gardens on the Tour.
Spend the day with a Garden Tour visiting nine inspiring private gardens in Boise. This special tour is a fundraiser for the Idaho Botanical Garden, its plants and programs.
