The 2012 NFL season, the 93rd regular season of the National Football League, is set to begin Wednesday, September 5, 2012, and will end with Super Bowl XLVII on Sunday, February 3, 2013, at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
Here are some of the legitimate ways to watch NFL games beyond those available on over-the-air broadcasts and basic cable:
•With the software(the best way):
Watch online now: Satellite Direct.
•Many games are offered through the NFL Network channel. You can order this from your cable or satellite provider. This channel carries all the preseason games, weekly season games and hosts the popular show, NFL Total Access. It also includes “NFL Replay,” which offers the five best games of the week.
•For a free but legitimate viewing option, check out Hulu‘s NFL page online. You can watch past games, highlights and interviews. Just look under your favorite team’s name or in the Game of the Week section.
The Thomas-Taylor showdown: Stepping onto the field in Denver on Sunday night will likely cause Pittsburgh cornerback Ike Taylor to shake a little. On the last play of a game that counted on that field, Denver receiver Demaryius Thomas stiff-armed and badly beat Taylor on his way to a 80-yard touchdown pass from former Denver quarterback Tim Tebow on the first offensive play of overtime to give the Broncos a wild-card-round victory over the Steelers. The play will live forever in both Denver and Pittsburgh. I’m sure Manning will try to create some new memories for Thomas and Taylor if the opportunity presents itself Sunday night.
This offseason, San Francisco signed Mario Manningham and Randy Moss to be competent receivers for Smith. The addition of receivers will allow Harbaugh to let Smith take more shots down the field this season. I guarantee this will cause a rise in Alex Smith's interception numbers.
I'm not trying to say Alex Smith is going to go back to being terrible, he's just not going to repeat what he did last year.
Smith's five interceptions last year (at a low 1.12 percent of his passes) were his lowest total since 2007 when he threw four, but only played in seven games. Smith's other interception totals during his NFL career include 11, 16, 12 and 10.
This year on 3rd-and-9, the 49ers offense won't still be content with a two-yard check-down. Randy Moss will be on the field. Do you know what Randy Moss is like when he doesn't get the ball?
The Saints received a roster exemption for Vilma so they will not have to make a corresponding roster cut to accommodate the linebacker. But Smith now counts against the team's active roster.
Mary Kay Cabot of The Plain Dealer first reported the Browns had been granted a roster exemption for Fujita.
Saints safety Roman Harper said he'd welcome the return of his defensive teammates, Vilma and Smith.
"Well, if coach (Aaron) Kromer would let him come out, I'd definitely like to play with these guys," Harper told reporters.
"I'm excited," Saints quarterback Drew Brees told NFL.com and NFL Network reporter Aditi Kinkhabwala. "I've been focused on the game, but I hoped that that would be the case. No, I'm not surprised. I wouldn't call me surprised. Obviously, they saw the information that we've seen for a long time."
It'd be hard for me to think a player with Hightower's skill set and leadership qualities wouldn't be starting for the Patriots, whose defense lacked a lot of firepower in 2011.
After losing Mario Williams to free agency, the Texans got Wade Philips a new toy off the edge in former Illinois pass rusher Whitney Mercilus.
Although Williams only played part of the season last year due to injury, Houston's defense thrived and young linebackers Conner Barwin and Brooks Reed stepped up to the challenge.
Mercilus probably won't be the starter coming into the season but will be a great addition to the linebacker rotation. Barwin and Reed will most likely get the first string reps, keeping Mercilus just as a rotational player for now.
After passing on David DeCastro and trading down, the Bengals still end up with a starting-caliber offensive guard in Wisconsin's Kevin Zeiter.
Zeitler adds to a very under-the-radar offensive line that features Andrew Whitworth and Andre Smith anchoring the outsides and newly added Travelle Wharton penciled in at left guard.
