The Sustainable Plastics Packaging conference, organized by Plastics News Global Group, is coming to North America for the first time this year. The conference, previously held in Europe, explores the environmental challenges facing users and producers of plastics packaging and identify innovative solutions that meet demanding sustainability and economic criteria.
Perkins and Lindsay will present at 3:45 p.m. on the first day of the conference. Their session, Sustainable plastics: Challenges in protecting innovation & design, will explore the key intellectual property trends for sustainable plastics and proactive steps companies can do to protect advances.
“Some of the most significant advances in sustainable plastics come from the innovations of small firms and startups that may lack expertise in intellectual property strategy. However, many challenges in protecting innovation in sustainable plastics extend to large companies as well,” says Perkins. “To more successfully commercialize sustainable plastics innovations, there are several steps that companies and innovators need to be doing at early stages, not as afterthoughts for commercial products.”
Perkins says these steps include using a broad mix of tools to build a cost-effective portfolio with patents, defensive publications, creative trademark protection, digital intellectual assets, and other tools. These will be illustrated will practical examples and case studies during the presentation.
“In our session, we will briefly touch on key intellectual property trends for sustainable plastics and offer recommendations for proactive steps to protect advances in product design, product use, supply chain innovation, and the materials themselves,” says Perkins.
