National Doughnut Day started in 1938 as a fundraiser for the Chicago Salvation Army to help the needy during the Great Depression and to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” who served doughnuts to soldiers in France during World War I. While overseas, the lassies often cooked the doughnuts in the metal helmets of American soldiers. National Doughnut Day is celebrated on the first Friday of every June.
