Georgia’s newest utility power plant—the one megawatt Rocky Creek Solar Farm—was recently completed in Upson County, built by Radiance Solar and Cantsink Manufacturing.  The economics of solar are becoming more viable, with lower costs for solar leading to an increase in projects in the commercial and utility sectors and steady growth for both companies.

Solar Design & Development, the developer of the project, and Origis Energy USA, the majority owner of the facility, contracted Radiance and Cantsink to engineer and build the plant.

“We are proud to be a part of this milestone project,” said Pat Hutchinson, President of Cantsink Manufacturing, “and excited about the momentum of the solar industry in Georgia.”

The Radiance/Cantsink team implemented a solution for the multi-acre project, joining forces on the site plan, system design and racking installation. Bringing their specialized expertise, Cantsink provided general contracting, civil engineering, site prep and their proprietary helical pile foundation technology.  Radiance executed the system design and all aspects of electrical engineering, installation and commissioning.

The Rocky Creek Solar Farm became operational on June 14 and is now providing enough power to supply the electrical needs of approximately 300 homes.

“It’s been very exciting to work with Origis Energy and Solar Design & Development on such an important utility project that demonstrates the potential of solar,” said Jamie Porges, COO and Founder of Radiance Solar.

By the Numbers
• The system design includes 3,476 285-Watt solar panels mounted on 158 22-panel arrays supported by 483 Cantsink helical piles.
• The energy generated by each individual array is fed into one of 13 Shoals Technology Group combiner boxes, which then feed two Satcon 500 kW inverters.
• The inverters convert the solar facilities DC current to AC current, which is then fed into a Georgia Power transformer and fed into Georgia Power’s grid at 12kV.

“Radiance and Cantsink were the ideal partners for Origis in this challenging project in regards to the technical complexity of the project site,” said Johan Vanhee, partner & COO, Origis Energy. “The team delivered on all our expectations and requirements for the project in terms of system engineering, construction and budget objectives.”
