Building a business is familiar territory to Sanders, who founded Sanders Financial Management in 1994 and shepherded its growth into a financial advisory firm with more than $200 million in assets under management.
“Women have been leading the way in entrepreneurship, starting new businesses at nearly twice the rate of men,” notes Sanders. “Before many women start their own businesses they work in the corporate world, and that experience is of great value when they decide to go out on their own.”
There is a huge deficit of female leadership in the corporate world. In the Fortune 1000 there are only 35 female CEOs. The talent pool at big corporations is deepening, however, with executives like Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and Google’s Marissa Mayer likely to be Fortune 500 CEOs one day.
Despite the fact that the executive level is still male-dominated, Sanders remains optimistic about the future of women in business. “There’s no shortage of talented and ambitious women,” she said, “and they will continue to break through the glass ceiling one at a time, or else start their own businesses.”
