The evening will consist of films that tell the story of sustainable food, speakers who inspire attendees to think about their food choices, and tasty food and drinks that will prove that local makes a difference. Tickets are available for $20. All money raised during the event will benefit Lights. Camera. Help's. educational programing that teaches nonprofits how to use film to deliver their message.
“Most food events here in Austin focus on taste. Our event not only focuses on taste, but it also teaches people about the value of local, sustainable foods through the powerful medium of film,” said event organizer Chelsea Staires.
The event will bring together many partners from the Austin food community. These organizations all place value on food grown locally and sustainably here in Austin and their aim is to use the event to show the community how valuable a commodity this really is.
“There are many ways for individuals to eat locally in [Austin] but we feel that people don’t really know why they should care,” said Aaron Bramley, Co-Founder and Director of Education at Lights. Camera. Help. “Other than the food tasting better and being healthier, there are a whole host of reasons for making local, sustainable food a larger part of your diet. We want to show how film is educating people about that.”
According to sustainabletable.org, eating local and sustainable foods can have an incredible impact on climate change, economic inequalities and even human rights abuses. Additionally, studies have shown that small-scale, organic farming operations use 60% less fossil fuel per unit of food than conventional industrial farms. (Norberg-Hodge, Helena , Todd Merrifield, and Steven Gorelick. Bringing The Food Economy Home: Local Alternatives to Global Agribusiness. Bloomfield , CT : Kumarian Press. 2002. p.4)
