WHO: 8th-grade classes from Briggs and Cascade middle schools.
WHAT: Lock up Your Future Campus Day.
WHEN: Thursday, Feb. 26. Briggs: 9-11:50 a.m., Cascade: 12-2:00 p.m.
WHERE: Tours will be conducted all around campus. The mini college fair will take place at the Student Recreation Center Bonus Room, 1320 15th Ave. (next to Hayward Field). The "map your future" activities will take place in various rooms on campus.
WHY: To encourage students to begin thinking about and preparing for their future.
Every student will tour campus, attend a mini college fair, and participate in a “map your future” activity. The tours will be led by several university student volunteers and will highlight student housing, the Student Recreation Center and the Erb Memorial Union. The mini college fair will feature representatives and resources from various Oregon colleges, including Oregon State University, Western Oregon University, Lane Community College and the University of Oregon. Students will brainstorm their career interests and potential college paths in the “map your future” activity.
State-wide budget cuts have reduced and even eliminated the college and career-focused aspects of many middle schools’ curricula. We are thankful for the work these students have done to bring college readiness back into our middle school curriculum,” said Linda Erickson, Briggs Middle School librarian.
“Lock up Your Future” is a local level version of the Consumer Bankers Association’s (CBA) College Bound Aid Hit the Books Running...The more you know, the less you’ll owe! campaign. The campaign is being judged as part of the Public Relations Student Society of America’s 2009 Bateman Competition.
