Magpies & Peacocks was founded in 2012 by acclaimed British native and Designer Sarah-Jayne Smith in response to her desire to create awareness of ethical fashion practices. Her keen eye for design and a creative mind inspired her to launch a new a process for the Houston style-conscious. Today, philanthropic fashionistas are given the opportunity to donate luxury brand accessories for the greater good of local Houston charities while providing environmental value.
With upcycling practices, fashion cast-offs have a chance to reincarnate into a new item that someone else will covet. Sarah-Jayne and her savvy team created a series of tasteful events known as “Closet Deposit”parties to acquire such donations to be held at various specialty retailers. Attendees are invited to donate their formerly fabulous accessories, receive a tax donation receipt, and eagerly anticipate a new coveted creation whose proceeds will benefit local non-profits. This is a new concept that Magpies & Peacocks hopes will be rapidly embraced. Smith shares three main objectives and three essential bi-products in mind that motivated her to rescue formerly fabulous items from Houstonian’s closets to landfill. “Firstly, to harvest luxury brand fashion accessories that are not typically donated; then, re-work to create distinct, curated collections for a new retail market; and lastly to raise money for grass roots causes here in Houston who are making a difference. Our goal is to make donating fashion accessories an enjoyable and tax deductible pursuit; Help get recycled materials into the curriculum of our arts and education programs; and Provide a platform to showcase and support the skills of up and coming local creative talent.”
Sarah-Jayne and her team have furthered this vision by tapping into the vast creative resources of local fashion, art and design students to provide them with the inventory collected from "Closet Deposits" for re-fashioning. Once items are collected from the parties, design students assess which goods have potential for raw materials and trim. Techniques are taught on how to disassemble and reassemble into new forms of accessories through workshops hosted by various design and art leaders that will teach the art of upcycling and what was once old and tired becomes new and vibrant. Once the items are completed, they will be featured in select retailers in Houston and online.
Boutiques and specialty retailers such as as One Green Street, Langford Market, Cakewalk Style and Cameo , West Ave will be hosting “Closet Deposit” parties in their respective locations to attract local clientele starting on November 8th and running through January 31, 2013. Magpies and Peacocks is committed to put money back into community programs through these events and looks forward to collaborating with these key retailers to support their fashion forward social enterprise.
