MARITZ EXPERTS CALL FOR RENEWED LEADERSHIP

Understanding the human dynamic of people is now more important than ever; it’s a call for face-to-face business

St. Louis, MO (Oct. 5, 2010) – As the dust settles from the business challenges companies have faced in the past two years, it is more critical than ever that leaders, maintain engagement of their people, and guide their organizations to discover the opportunity in change. Maritz Travel President and CEO Christine Duffy will address leaders of the hospitality industry at the Cornell Hospitality Research Summit on Oct. 7 in a keynote entitled “Coming Out of the Storm – Leading Through Change and Opportunity.”

As a leader within the business travel industry, Duffy has experienced the perfect storm, including the AIG Effect, the economic downturn and natural disasters, all of which have fundamentally changed the way the industry must do business. In her keynote address, Duffy will share with attendees how they can shift their perspectives to create a powerful “new normal,” fostering engagement among employees, partners and customers. Duffy also will discuss how companies utilizing meetings, events and incentives should tap into behavioral, social and neurosciences to motivate and inspire people, and create a rich customer and employee experience by engaging a deeper sense of purpose.

“As companies continue to seek better business performance in today’s economic environment, face-to-face meetings can be a powerful contributor to driving growth and innovation. Face-to-face meetings help inspire people to their company’s mission, create an environment for success, and facilitate effective collaboration,” said Duffy. “We’ve seen the rhetoric around travel stop, but unfortunately, the stigma has not. We must be able to make the case for why face-to-face business drives business results.”

As a result, Duffy and Mary Beth McEuen, vice president and executive director of The Maritz Institute, authored “The Future of Meetings: The Case for Face-to-Face,” which was recently published in Cornell’s Center for Hospitality Research Report. This whitepaper focuses on a science-based approach for deciding when face-to-face meetings are the most effective means to drive business results. These criteria are grounded in studies from the human sciences with a focus on neuroscience.

“It’s imperative for leaders of organizations to have a better understanding of what drives their people, what makes them tick, if they want to see improved business results,” said McEuen. “Our goal is to help them get into the minds of people, providing organizations with an understanding of the human dynamic. Neuroscience studies support the case for face-to-face meetings as a means to capture attention, inspire positive emotional climate, and build human networks and relationships. We know this is what works. People need to have face-to-face interaction with one another in order to move business forward.”
