Time Magazine and Goodyear Honor Waldorf Dealer

Andrew Dixon Wins National Recognition for Community Service and Industry Accomplishments at NADA Convention

Andrew F. Dixon, President of Ken Dixon Honda, a Honda dealership in Waldorf, Md., has been honored as a nominee for the 2010 TIME Magazine Dealer of the Year award. Dixon was one of a select group of dealers from across the country honored at the 93rd annual National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Convention & Exposition in Orlando.

The announcement of this year’s Dealer of the Year and finalists was made by Mark Ford, President and Group Publisher of TIME Magazine, and Johann Finkelmeier, Vice President & General Manager - Original Equipment N.A. Consumer Tire, The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, at the formal opening of the convention, which is attended by more than 25,000 individuals involved in the automobile industry.

The TIME Magazine Dealer of the Year award is one of the automobile industry’s most prestigious and highly coveted awards for new-car dealers. Recipients are among the nation’s most successful auto dealers, but they must also demonstrate a long-standing commitment to effective community service.

Dixon, 58, was chosen to represent the Maryland Automobile Dealers Association in the national competition--one of only 45 automobile dealers, from 17,000 nationwide, nominated for the 41st annual award. The award is sponsored by TIME Magazine in association with Goodyear, and in cooperation with NADA. A panel of faculty members from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan selects one finalist from each of the four NADA regions and one national Dealer of the Year.

“This nomination is recognition and the highest compliment my fellow dealers can bestow on me,” Dixon said of his TIME Dealer of the Year nomination by his Maryland peers. “This has been both an unexpected and humbling event.”

Dixon graduated from Charlotte Hall School (Military Academy) in Charlotte Hall, Md., in 1969, and then earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance and Marketing at the University of South Florida in 1973.

After college, Dixon began his career in new car sales at the dealership run by his father, Ken Dixon, who was Maryland’s 1983 TIME Dealer of the Year nominee. Andrew Dixon attended the Chevrolet Dealer Academy in Warren, Mich., in 1975, and went on to work in service, parts, F&I, and used cars.

In 1991, Dixon purchased his father's dealership, and, today, in addition to Honda, he represents Chevrolet and Cadillac at his other Waldorf dealership. Dixon is a five-time winner of the Honda President's Award and has achieved Cadillac Master Dealer, Buick Select Dealer, and Chevrolet Service Supremacy status.

“Throughout the years, we have been privileged to win literally dozens of sales incentives,” explains Dixon, “I have not kept records about each contest but as a result of our success, my wife and I have been the guest of our dealership's business partners on every continent except Antarctica.”

In the area of community service, Dixon has a long and distinguished track record, having served as a member of, or providing financial and publicity support to, the Jaycees, Red Cross, Hospice, Rotary Club, Charles County Chamber of Commerce, Maryland Chamber of Commerce, Waldorf Lions Club, Christmas Connection, and the Charles County Children's Aid Society. Dixon also supports, he says, “the churches and charities that my dealership’s associates are active in.”

Currently, Dixon is a founding member and serving as a trustee of the “Trust in Small Business PAC” and is a director of the Neptune Florida Yacht Club. In the past, he has also sponsored the Ken Dixon Scholastic Improvement Award (2003-2007), and served as the co-chairman of the scholarship committee of the Charlotte Hall school foundation, from 1985 through 1990.

Dixon says his most meaningful and important civic achievement has been “participating with the dedicated volunteers at the Children's Aid Society and the Christmas Connection, helping to improve the lives of underprivileged children in my community.”

He adds that “helping people achieve their dreams” has been the most rewarding aspect of his automotive career.

Nominated for the TIME Magazine Dealer of the Year award by Peter Kitzmiller, President of the Maryland Automobile Dealers Association, Andrew Dixon is also a devoted husband, and the father of two adult children.
