In April, President Obama signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act which, for the first time, officially recognizes September 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. This summer President Obama launched the United We Serve initiative, which culminated today with the National Day of Service and Remembrance.
“I ask you to join me in saluting the heroes and innocent victims of September 11. Honor their memory today, and every day, through service to our community and our nation,” said Senator Ben Cardin in a Senate floor statement.
“September 11th is a day to remember those who lost their lives and to express our solidarity with the families they left behind. It is a day to honor the heroic public servants who help keep us safe here and abroad, and a day for Americans to express their gratitude for their sacrifice,” said Congressman Chris Van Hollen.
“The National Day of Service will resurrect the pride and patriotism felt by American citizens following the September 11th attacks, and channel it into proactive community volunteerism,” said Congresswoman Donna Edwards.
Governor Martin O'Malley joined Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake and a dozen or more volunteers to help construct new homes for first-time homeowners in Maryland. Today’s effort was part of Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake’s “9.09.09 project” to build 9 houses in 9 days throughout the month of September.
Lt. Governor Brown participated in a “Week of Service” that included a speech to students at Meade High School about the importance of volunteerism; a beautification project at Cheltenham Veterans Cemetery in Prince George’s County; a visit to Loch Raven Veterans Rehabilitation Center in Baltimore with disabled veterans; and a visit to Our Daily Bread in Baltimore where Brown served breakfast to homeless veterans. The Lt. Governor finished the week in Rockville with volunteers from Rebuilding Together for a renovation project at Stepping Stone Homeless Shelter.
