Memorial Hermann Receives $10 Million Gift from Grateful Patient

06.08.2009 – HOUSTON -- Celia and Albert J. Weatherhead III generously donated $10 million to support the work of P. Roc Chen, M.D., a neurosurgeon at the Mischer Neuroscience Institute, and Tung Shu, M.D., a urologist at Vanguard Urologic Institute. Both Institutes are located at Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center.

Each physician will receive $5 million dollars over a 10-year period. Dr. Chen will dedicate the funds to technology development, cerebrovascular research and advanced training of young neurosurgeons in cerebrovascular diseases. Dr. Shu says the funds will support research that he and his associate, Kevin Slawin, M.D., are conducting in an effort to develop a vaccine to treat prostate cancer.

This is the Weatherheads’ first gift to Memorial Hermann.

“We are so grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Weatherhead for their financial generosity to Memorial Hermann and for the relationships they have established with Dr. Chen and Dr. Shu.” says Dan Wolterman, Memorial Hermann President and CEO.

“Our philanthropic decisions are driven by human relations and emotional connections,” shared Mr. Weatherhead. “It was ‘meant to be’ that we were introduced to K. Lance Gould, M.D., almost 20 years ago.”

Mr. Weatherhead was introduced to Drs. Chen and Shu by Dr. Gould, Professor of Medicine, Martin Bucksbaum Distinguished University Chair in Cardiology at the The University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Mr. Weatherhead was referred to Dr. Gould in 1989 after suffering a heart attack and was determined not to have another. Twenty years later, Mr. Weatherhead continues to support Gould’s innovative approach to managing heart disease. In 1999, he and wife, Celia, helped establish the Weatherhead PET Center for Preventing and Reversing Atherosclerosis located within Memorial Hermann - Texas Medical Center.

Mr. Weatherhead shared, “Celia and I admire all the fine doctors at Memorial Hermann who have taken care of me. We have such a fond, firm relationship with Dr. Chen and Dr. Shu. By helping fund their research, it is one less thing they have to worry about at the beginning of their careers. Now they can spend more quality time with their patients and advance their own techniques.”

Al Weatherhead is a Cleveland native and president of Cleveland-based Weatherhead Industries, a privately owned manufacturer of industrial products. He has 60 years of operations experience in the plastics and metalworking industries. Since 1987, he has been the president of the Weatherhead Foundation, which focuses on higher education endowments. During the last two decades, the Foundation has generously supported Case Western Reserve University, Columbia University, Harvard University, Tulane University, The University of Texas Medical School at Houston and now, Memorial Hermann.
