Mercy Housing California celebrates revitalization of Madison Place in Bakersfield

Celebration will pay tribute to friends and supporters of this Mercy Housing California affordable housing community

Mercy Housing California is celebrating the revitalization of Madison Place in Bakersfield on Monday, October 3, 2011, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., 1885 Madison Street, Bakersfield, CA 93307. This special event will feature a speakers program, a special dedication in memory of longtime supporter and former Mercy Housing California Board Member, Jim Burke, luncheon and property tours.

In addition to the special dedication, other longtime friends and supporters to be honored include the City of Bakersfield, County of Kern, Mercy & Memorials Hospitals / Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) and the Sisters of Mercy.

Madison Place is comprised of 56 affordable townhome rental units constructed on a 4.78-acre site. When construction was completed in 1997, the property’s location was considered to be on the outskirts of Bakersfield, and for that reason, Madison Place was designed to feature ample common space, including a community room, computer labs, an activities room and central open green space. Six one-bedroom units, 12 two-bedroom units, 30 three-bedroom units and eight four-bedroom units make up the 56 affordable rental townhomes. The units are specifically targeted for large families who have the most difficulty finding quality affordable rental housing. All of the units are affordable to persons earning 50% of the area median income or less. Madison Place is currently home to 90 adults and 100 children.

In 2009, the City of Bakersfield Redevelopment Agency approved over $300,000 for revitalization of the property. The scope of the work was extensive. The upgrades enhanced the exterior of the complex with stucco and new paint on all buildings, featuring a uniform color scheme; new trim, downspouts and gutters; and brass door numbers. Safety and security were improved by replacing handrails, installing additional security cameras, refurbishing entry gates and adding security screens to each unit. The overall look of the grounds was enhanced by recoating the parking lot surface, repainting stalls, and replacing the playground structure and play surface.

Property management is provided by Mercy Housing Management Group, a division of Mercy Housing. On-site resident services programs, including after-school programs for youth, health and wellness workshops and neighborhood safety programs are provided by Mercy Housing California and numerous local service providers and agencies, including extensive community outreach programs offered on-site by Mercy and Memorial Hospitals of Bakersfield.

Financial partners in the original development of Madison Place included the City of Bakersfield, County of Kern, Merritt Community Capital Corporation and SAMCO. The project architect was Milazzo & Associates and the general contractor was Wallace & Smith.
