Mercy Housing’s Johnston Center Residences wins Readers’ Choice Award

Affordable Housing Finance magazine subscribers selected the Mercy Housing Lakefront property as the best special needs affordable housing property in the nation

CHICAGO – Mercy Housing’s Johnston Center Residences joined the ranks of some of the best affordable housing developments in the nation when it was voted Affordable Housing Finance Magazine’s Reader’s Choice Winner in the Special Needs category.

For the Seventh Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, Affordable Housing Finance is honoring 10 developments from across the nation that serve low-income Americans and their communities.

The Johnston Center Residences in Milwaukee features 91 units of housing for individuals who have been homeless and disabled or are at high-risk of homelessness. The development has also created 10+ permanent jobs, injected $12.7 million into Milwaukee’s economy and helped to create and modify policies and procedures in county and state government around supportive affordable housing.

“We are honored that the Johnston Center Residences was selected for this award,” said Cindy Holler, Mercy Housing Lakefront President. “We are grateful to all of the partners that helped make the Johnston Center a reality for the 91 residents who call this property home. This project was just one step in addressing the pressing need to end homelessness and increase affordable housing in Milwaukee.”

Johnston Center Residences combine the adaptive reuse of the old Johnston Medical Center and new construction on adjacent space. Forty-one of the units house individuals who were chronically homeless, very low-income and disabled. The remaining 50 units house very low-income people who were at high-risk for homelessness.

Affordable Housing Finance magazine and e-newsletter subscribers voted on the winners in nine categories out of 35 finalists. The winners will be featured in the November/December 2011 issue of Affordable Housing Finance.
